UMES Splits Doubleheader with UMBC

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – More than a week away from the diamond, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team returned home where they split their nonconference doubleheader with in-state rival UMBC.

Maryland Eastern Shore (9-20) took the nightcap, 7-2, but dropped game one despite rallying from a seven-run deficit, 10-9.

Maryland Eastern Shore posted 12 hits in game one, led by Casarez and Guerra each going a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate. Senior Vanessa Gomez had a team-high three RBIs in the loss.

UMES produced seven runs on 12 hits in game two, led by senior Trenece Nash. She went 3-of-4 and tied a career-high with four RBIs. Fellow classmate Kaitlyn Hitch and sophomores Samantha Casarez and Adrienne Guerra each collected two hits in the victory.

Guerra held the Retrievers to only two hits; thus, picking up her seventh win of the season.
