Golden Match Leads Hampton Over UMES
HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University women’s tennis team started a three-match homestand on Wednesday morning with a 7-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Sophomore Steffy Paez achieved a rarity in tennis to lead the Lady Pirates on Wednesday by winning a “Golden Match” at the fifth line of singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tearraney Peak. In the match, Paez didn’t lose a point the entire match. The win for Paez snapped a three-match losing skid for the native of Columbia.
The doubles tandems of Mariam Mitaishvii and Mikaela Pierce won at number one, Julia d'Auvergne and Cherise Slocombe at number two and Anastasiia Romanova and Paez at number three all won 6-0. In singles, Mitaishvii won 6-1, 6-1 at number one while Slocombe, Pierce, d'Auvergne and Romanova joined Paez with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at 2pm when they host North Carolina Central University at Neilson-Screen Tennis Stadium.

NSU Blanks UMES
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped just two games all day in a 7-0 win over UMES on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The victory improved NSU's record to 5-0 in MEAC play and 8-9 overall. The Spartans won their fourth straight match and the sixth in the past seven. It also gave them at worst a share of the Northern Division title. NSU can clinch the outright regular season title on Saturday with a victory at home over Morgan State.
The Spartans took care of UMES on Wednesday in quick fashion. They won all three doubles matches by 6-0 scores and five of the six singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 margins.
The sweep began in doubles, including a win at the top spot in the lineup for sophomore Dajana Cvjetkovic and freshman Marta Gomar against Melequa King and Alese Brown.
In the other two matches, seniors Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca won at the second spot over DaTonya Price and Crystal Crook, while juniors Lia Gordeeva and Ana Popovic defeated Tearraney Peak and Evelyn Chappell at the third spot.
In singles, the Spartans made it a complete sweep at the second through sixth positions. Gordeeva defeated Brown at the second slot, while Gomar did the same at the third position against Price.
Macchiavello downed Crook at the fourth slot, while Popovic topped Peak at the fifth spot in the lineup. Lhorca also won by a 6-0, 6-0 score over Chappell at the sixth spot.
Only at No. 1 singles did the Hawks manage to take a game. Cvjetkovic won the first set over King, 6-2, before sweeping the second, 6-0.
UMES fell to 0-12 overall and 0-5 in the MEAC.
NSU will host MSU on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first of three home matches on the weekend.
