DSU Edges Hampton Late to Secure Series Sweep

DOVER, Del. - Monday afternoon, the Delaware State softball team (17-16, 10-2 MEAC) came alive late, highlighted by pinch hitter Danielle Velez connecting for a clutch two-out single in her first at-bat of the season to bring in sophomore Vanessa Washington (single) from second, as the Hornets defeated the visiting Hampton Pirates (12-22, 4-5 MEAC), 2-1.

With this win, DSU pulled off its first regular season series sweep over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Hampton since 2012.

Tara Tursellino, who was credited with each win throughout the series, turned in arguably her best game of the season.  Not only did she tie a season-high in strikeouts (7), but she allowed five hits and no walks for her sixth complete-game performance of the season.  The lone run given up by Tursellino occurred in the second by way of a sacrifice-fly RBI by infielder MacKenzie Hope.

Allie Hotetz also tossed all seven innings, allowing five hits, no walks and one earned run, in addition to limiting DSU’s Nicole Gazzola to a 0-for-2 effort, snapping a season-long 13-game hit streak.
