Norfolk State Drops Decision At Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood won both contested doubles matches and the first two completed singles matches to come away with a 4-0 win over the Norfolk State men's tennis team on Monday afternoon at Lancer Courts.

The Lancers won at both No. 1 and 5 singles to close out the match after also taking No. 6 singles by default. Longwood improved to 7-14 overall while NSU dropped to 6-14.

NSU defaulted at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to its short-handed lineup. Longwood earned the doubles point by winning the other two matches, including a 6-2 win at the second position where Florian Uffer and Lachlan Manser downed sophomores Antonio Pejic and Fatehdeep Singh.

In the top doubles slot, freshman Benedikt Henning and Flavian Fernandez fell to Alfonso Castellano and Julian Farthing by a 6-4 margin.

Castellano also won at No. 1 singles, taking a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Henning. Bharani Sankar helped Longwood finish the overall victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles over Singh.

The middle three singles matches were all abandoned after the overall match ended. At the second spot, freshman Dan Dumitrascu led in the second set by a 5-3 margin over Uffer after dropping the first set, 6-3.

At the third position, Pejic led Farthing 1-0 in the second set after also winning the first by a 7-6 score. Fernandez lost the first set to Rosen Ilchev at No. 4 singles by a 6-4 score but led 4-2 in the second set when the match came to a close.

NSU will close out the regular season on Saturday when the Spartans host Morgan State at 3 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex. The Spartans can wrap up the MEAC Northern Division regular season title with a victory.
