Wildcats Edge Lady Eagles with Walk-Off Winner

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The North Carolina Central University softball team rallied to tie Sunday’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball series finale with two runs in the fifth before host Bethune-Cookman University squeaked out the 3-2 win on a walk-off single by freshman shortstop Brianna Sanders.

Sophomore first baseman Iesha Waters scored the game-winning run for Bethune-Cookman.

NCCU (3-34, 0-9) belted out nine hits, including three infield singles by sophomore Danyelle Noland and two more hits on the dirt by senior Markell Wylie.

Junior Sabrina Anguiano (5-11) had five strikeouts and did not allow an earned run or walk in her second straight complete-game victory over the Lady Eagles. Booker (2-14) took the loss despite only allowing one earned run in her complete-game effort.

FAMU Blanks NCAT For Series Sweep

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FAMU Softball Team remained perfect in conference play Sunday afternoon with an 8-0 decision over North Carolina A&T State at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.

FAMU (21-20, 9-0 MEAC) finished Sunday’s game with 11 hits, led by Whitney Farris with three hits, and Amber Fullwood and Nachelle Watson with two hits each. Fullwood and Alexis Day each drove in two runs.

Freshman Tahlia Snider (3-1) got her second win in the series, working three innings with one hit allowed, one strikeout and two walks, before moving to shortstop when Kieifi Myrick was injured in a home plante collision.

Junior Kenya Pereira came on to pitch two scoreless innings, striking out three, while allowing no hits.

Hornets Take Two from Pirates in Doubleheader

Dover, Del. –   The Delaware State softball team (16-16, 9-2 MEAC) increased its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) winning streak to five, in addition to moving to 7-1 at home this season by defeating the Hampton Pirates (12-21, 4-4 MEAC) both times in Sunday afternoon’s doubleheader, 6-4 and 7-2.

In game one, the Hornets finished with eight hits, led by Nicole Gazzola (4), who extended her hit streak to 12 games.  Gazzola also stole a pair of bases to push her MEAC-leading total to 26. Infielder Vanessa Washington, the MEAC’s leader in homers (7) and slugging percentage (.716), went 2-for-3, highlighted by a two-run RBI-single to give DSU a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Pitching wise, DSU’s Nicole Brock (7-5) continued her MEAC onslaught by surrendering five hits, two earned runs, three walks and fanning seven HU batters in five innings of work. 

In relief effort, junior Tara Tursellino (8-7) picked up the win, allowing two walks, a hit, one earned run and totaling four strikeouts.

For HU, infielders Danielle Budden and Taylor McCoy both registered a team-high two hits, while as a team, the Pirates stranded seven runners, headlined by leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

In game two, DSU’s efforts included totaling 11 hits, with nine off HU starter Jada Fields (4-8).  Along with Gazzola, Haley Jones tallied two hits, with the second resulting in a single up the middle in the fifth.

Tursellino (9-7), on the other hand, picked up the victory in four innings of work, allowing five hits, two walks, one earned and striking out four Pirate batters.  In the case of Brock, she stoned HU in the final three innings, surrendering no walks, no runs, two hits and totaling three K’s.  Between the two on Sunday, they tallied 18 K’s and allowed four earned runs.
