Bethune-Cookman’s 17-match MEAC Win Streak Stopped At FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Lady Wildcats’ 17-match MEAC conference winning streak ended Saturday as Florida A&M rallied to a one-point win.

Bethune-Cookman (11-12, 4-1) won the doubles points behind the tandems of Mina Matsuba/Matea Roki and Ancia Ifill/Alejandra Vidal before the Rattlers (8-11, 4-1) took four of the six singles matches.  

Matsuba improved to 22-0 lifetime in MEAC singles play with her ninth straight win of the season while Vidal took her eighth straight win and is now 15-6 on the season.

This was the Lady Wildcats’ regular season finale. The defending MEAC champions will learn their MEAC tournament seeding next Monday.

North Carolina Central Falls At Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior Aissa Muamba won her third straight singles match to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team in a 5-2 road loss at Gardner-Webb University Saturday afternoon.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-13. The Lady Eagles dip to 3-12 after suffering their sixth consecutive loss.

Sophomore Jamie Rogers recorded NCCU’s other point with a singles win at No. 4 in the lineup. Rogers squeaked out her straight-set triumph by a narrow score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

Muamba won in the top slot, prevailing 6-4, 6-2.

Muamba (8-5) and Rogers (8-6) lead the Lady Eagles with eight wins apiece.

Gardner-Webb secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then clinched the victory with four singles wins – all in straight sets.

NCCU next visits Hampton University on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m.

Hampton Drops 6-0 Decision At Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Hampton University tennis teams closed out a Pennsylvania weekend by losing 6-0 to Temple University on Saturday.

Due to limited court space and matches going on in two different facilities, the singles matches were played first rather than the normal doubles matches.

Mariam Mitaishvii lost at number one singles in a tight first set to Alina Abdurakhimova 7-5, 6-1. Cherise Slocombe lost her match at number two 6-2, 6-1, while Mikaela Pierce fell at number three singles 6-1, 6-2.  At number four, Julia d’Auvergne fell 6-3, 6-0 to Monet Stuckey-Willis.  The last two singles matches were played to one set as Steffy Paez and Anastasiia Romanova lost their matches 6-1 as Hampton fell to 2-12 on the year.
