49ers Pull Away from North Carolina Central
DURHAM, N.C.—Junior pitcher Jennifer Allison held a strong Charlotte softball team to just one earned run over her first six innings pitched and collected two of North Carolina Central University’s four hits in a 6-1 non-conference loss at Parkwood Athletic Field Wednesday afternoon.
The 49ers, who are receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll, improved to 15-4 overall. The Lady Eagles were unable to win in their home opener and drop to 0-17.
Charlotte senior Lexi Betancourt improved to 10-2 in the complete-game effort, scattering her four hits allowed over four different frames. Betancourt struck out three, including a big K to end the sixth with the game at 3-1 and the potential tying runs in scoring position on second and third base.
Senior Markell Wylie led off the bottom of the first before Allison collected the Lady Eagles next two hits with singles in the second and fifth. Tracy had NCCU’s lone extra-base hit with her double that landed just inside the left-field foul line.
NCCU plays two more home games on Friday in a doubleheader against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member Howard University on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.

Radford Shuts Out Norfolk State In Doubleheader
NORFOLK, Va.—Radford limited the Norfolk State softball team to eight hits on the day in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The Highlanders took the first game 8-0 in six innings before grinding out a 3-0 victory in the second contest.
Freshman shortstop Stephanie Davenport had three of the team's eight hits on the day, including two in game two.
In game one, Abby Morrow (6-5) pitched all six innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.
Marissa Gagliano batted 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Highlanders, while Nia Chiles went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a solo homer.
In game two, Kayla Huffman (3-0) pitched six innings for the Highlanders, giving up five hits while striking out six.
Freshman Megan Przeslawski (1-2) pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-6 overall, while Radford improved to 11-5.
NSU will play at Liberty on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the first of five games at the Liberty Softball Classic.

Bethune-Cookman Sweeps Doubleheader from George Mason
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Bethune-Cookman Softball snapped a 17-game losing skid with a doubleheader sweep of George Mason in the 2016 home-opener for the Wildcats on Wednesday, March 9, at Sunnyland Park. The Wildcats collected the first game, 8-1, before grabbing a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, junior pitcher Sabrina Anguiano went the distance in the circle, while five different Wildcats tallied hits to help Bethune-Cookman grab an 8-1 victory.
Anguiano, a preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection as a pitcher, tallied her first win on the campaign, moving her record to 1-10. In the process, she worked all seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking one and striking out three.
The loss went to GMU’s Lopez who evened her record at 1-1 on the year. She allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and walked two in four innings of work. Sarah Kleinfelter tossed the final two innings in the circle for the Patriots, giving up three unearned runs on one hit with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
Sophia Ortega led the Wildcats at the dish with a 1-for-2 game, scoring a run and driving in another. Campos finished the game 1-for-3, highlighted by the solo home run in the fifth. And it was Mariah Davis finishing 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI as well.
In game two, Melissa Berouty and Bryanna Campos tallied a pair of hits each, while Bailey Conner and Sabrina Anguiano combined for time in the pitcher’s circle to help Bethune-Cookman to a 3-2 win.
Bailey Conner collected the win to improve to 1-2 on the year, while Anguiano picked up her first save of the campaign. Conner tossed 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out two Patriots and walking another. Meanwhile, it was Anguiano working 1.2 innings, striking out three batters and giving up just two hits.
The loss went to starting pitcher Marina Vitalich, dropping her to 3-4 on the season, as she went the distance and allowed three runs on eight hits, walked three and fanned four batters.
The Maroon and Gold were paced at the plate by three players with two hits apiece in the nightcap, including Waters and Berouty who finished 2-for-3, respectfully. Campos went a perfect 2-for-2, and it was Ortega driving in a pair of runs on a 1-for-2 showing at the dish.
The Wildcats return to the field on Thursday, March 10, playing host to Tennessee-Martin at Sunnyland Park.
