Savannah State Falls At Home To Illinois State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women’s tennis team (0-12) fell to Illinois State University (8-4) Tuesday at the Tiger Tennis Courts.

The Lady Tigers lost the doubles point to fall 1-0.  SSU’s doubles duo of Elizabeth Geronimo and Rachida Kateb fell to ISU doubles team of Marcia Tere-Apisah and Veronika Golanova 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles position, while SSU’s doubles team of Jennyfer Vivas and Bria Burrows fell to ISU’s doubles duo of Jana Kustkova and Sarah Paulson 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles position.

ISU’s doubles duo of Catherine Shulman and Chanel Scudiero won by default due to the Lady Tigers not having enough players to put on the court.

Vivas came the closest to push the set to the third set as she fell to Scudiero 6-3 in the first set and 7-6 (4) at the No. 4 singles position, while Geronimo fell to Golanova 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles position and Kateb fell to Kustkova 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position.

Burrows fell to Valerija Gercar 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles position, while Williams fell to Shulman 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position and Paulson won by default due to the Lady Tigers not having enough players to fill the position.

The Lady Tigers continue with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play against North Carolina Central University Thursday at 3 p.m. in Durham, N.C.

Hampton Stumbles Against South Dakota State

Orrlando, Fla. – Hampton University took on South Dakota State on Tuesday in Orlando and fell 6-1 to the Jackrabbits.

In singles, Mikaela Pierce scored the lone Hampton victory on the day at No. 3 when she toppled Florencia Magni 6-0, 6-2.  Mariam Mitaishvii took her match at No. 1 singles to a deciding third-set tiebreaker but she lost to Iasmin Rosa 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5).

During doubles, the No. 2 tandem of Julia d’Auvergne and Cherise Slocombe lost a 9-7 tiebreaker against Magni and Beatriz Sousa for the tightest match in doubles.
