North Carolina Central Softball Drops Games to Rutgers and Brown

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The North Carolina Central University softball team lost a pair of games on day two of the UNCG Spartan Classic, falling to Rutgers University, 6-0, in the morning and Brown University, 5-2, in the early afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles (0-14) will play two more games in the Spartan Classic on Sunday with a rematch against Rutgers at10 a.m. and a showdown against host UNCG in the finale at 3 p.m.

Against Rutgers, Junior Jenny Tracy was 2-for-2 with a walk but she was left stranded on second base all three times as the Lady Eagles were held scoreless for a fifth consecutive time in a 6-0 loss to Rutgers (4-12).

Junior reliever Shayla Sweeney then fanned three more Lady Eagles in the seventh after Rutgers tacked on four more runs to earn her first save of the season. Sweeney recorded all six of her outs with strikeouts in her two innings of work. Senior Dresden Maddox (1-5) tossed the first five innings and also posted a half dozen K’s.

Against Brown, senior Markell Wylie was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored from the leadoff spot but NCCU was held to just one other hit as Brown (6-2) edged the Lady Eagles, 5-2.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Allison (0-5) hurled her second straight complete game on the day and had the Lady Eagles other hit with an infield popup that went off the diving catcher. She allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk. Brown junior counterpart Gina Chieffallo (2-0) went the distance for the win, scattering three hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.

Hampton Falls to Manhattan in Hampton Invitational

HAMPTON, Va.—The Hampton University softball team lost 12-4 to Manhattan College in five innings on Saturday as part of the Hampton Invitational at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium.

The Lady Pirates are now 4-5 on the season.

Senior Diamond Ponds, junior Kayla DeSchepper, senior Taylor McCoy, and freshman Kial Watts each had a hit for the Lady Pirates. McCoy had both of Hampton’s RBIs.

Sophomore Allyson Babinsack struck out four in 2.2 innings of work in the circle.

The Hampton Invitational will wrap up on Sunday, as Hampton faces Manhattan at 11 a.m. and Drexel at 1 p.m.

Spartans Rally to Sweep Rhode Island

NORFOLK, Va.—The Norfolk State softball team used a walk-off wild pitch to earn the game 1 win over Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field. NSU piled up nine hits in the second contest to earn a sweep of the Rams in a non-conference matchup.

In the first game, senior Whitney Williams and freshman Stephanie Davenport each had two hits in the contest, and sophomore Seana Moriarty scored twice. Sophomore Marissa Marrero (1-1) got the win, giving up six hits and three earned runs in all seven innings.

The rally spoiled a strong outing from URI starting pitcher Becca Rogers, who fanned five in five innings while allowing three hits and one earned run.

In the second game, Moriarty (3-for-4, three RBI) and McNair (3-for-4, one run, two RBI) played a big part in the win for the Spartans. Junior Devon Bitler and freshman Kylee Lopez each scored two runs as well.

Sophomore Megan Przeslawski got the victory, giving up six hits and four runs, three earned, in 5+ innings of work. She also struck out a career-high tying nine batters.

Relief pitcher Julia Waraksy (0-2) suffered both losses for the Rams.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

Savannah State Falls to Alabama State in Doubleheader

IRONDALE, Ala. – The Savannah State University softball team (6-13) fell to Alabama State University (7-12) 4-3 in eight innings in game one and 9-8 in game two Saturday at the Tiny Laster Tournament.

Junior pitcher Amanda Hallman went 5-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run and three RBIs with a 2.000 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .875 in both games, while junior right fielder Alexis Singleton went 6-for-9 with a run scored and recorded a .667 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. 

Senior first baseman Torrian Wright went 3-for-6 with an RBI and recorded a .500 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage.

In the first game, Hallman went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI with a home run, while Singleton went 2-for-4.  Hallman went the distance giving up three earned runs with eight hits and five strikeouts.  

In the second game, Hallman led SSU with a perfect batting average going 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs, while Singleton went 4-for-5 with a run scored.  Wright went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Cortni Jones went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub pitched the first five innings giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits, while Hallman (3-6) pitched the final 1.2 innings giving up two earned runs on five hits to pick up the loss. 

The Lady Tigers finish the tournament in Irondale, Ala., on Sunday with Grambling State at 11 a.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 p.m.

Lady Hawks Drop Two At Camel Stampede

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After being blanked in both games yesterday, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team saw their bats come alive; however, it was not enough as they lost both contests at the Camel Stampede.

UMES (4-8) dropped the first game against Marshall, 11-4, then fell in the nightcap versus Campbell, 12-4. As a result, the Lady Hawks ended the weekend winless (0-4).

Against Marshall, Maryland Eastern Shore produced four runs on seven hits. Seniors Vanessa Gomez and Trenece Nash each registered two dingers while sophomore Tesharra Hill delivered a two-run shot in the fourth.

For The Herd (9-8), they tallied 11 runs on 14 hits. Kaelynn Greene and Morgan Zerkle each recorded three dingers while Briana Daiss posted four RBIs in the win.

Against Campbell, UMES managed four runs on six hits with junior Allison Anderson collecting two of them. The Colorado native went 2-of-2 with a RBI and run scored.

Campbell (6-8) manufactured 12 runs on 13 hits, led by Schisler. She finished the night going a perfect 4-of-4 with six RBIs, two runs scored, and two homers.
