Coppin State Weekend Home Opener Canceled Due to Wet Field Conditions

BALTIMORE, Md.—Coppin State University’s softball home opener against Fairleigh-Dickinson and Rhode Island scheduled for Saturday and Sunday March 5 & 6, has been canceled due to unplayable field conditions.

Head softball Coach Gino Olivieri and the Lady Eagles hope to return to action on Tuesday, March 8th with a single game at UMBC beginning at 2 p.m.

Brown Blanks North Carolina Central

GREENSBORO, N.C.—North Carolina Central University was held to just four singles in an 8-0 loss to Brown University in the Lady Eagles first game of the UNCG Spartan Classic Friday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Bears scored eight runs off 10 hits, three walks and three errors by the Lady Eagles in the five-inning contest. Brown improved to 5-2 overall and NCCU fell to 0-12.

Leah Nakashima (2-1) had five strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

Senior London Booker (0-5) was on the hook for the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) over the first three innings.

NCCU continues play in the UNCG Spartan Classic with two games on Saturday against Rutgers University (9:30 AM) and Brown (Noon).

Florida A&M Drops Two In Florida Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The FAMU Rattler Softball team dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the University of Florida Aquafina Invitational on Friday, losing 4-3 to Illinois State, and 7-3 to South Alabama.

FAMU (5-8) dropped the opener to Illinois State in extra innings, 4-3, as a fielding error by second baseman Jessica Nathan allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth.

FAMU had six hits with Amber Fullwood, Denise Anderson and Nachelle Watson each driving in a run.

Junior pitcher Kenya Pereira (4-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in eight innings, with six strikeouts and five walks.

Against South Alabama, FAMU was held to three hits, falling behind 6-0 after two and a half innings of play.

The Rattlers scored single runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and sixth innings, but couldn’t muster enough offense against the Jaguar pitching, striking out 17 times in seven innings.

FAMU pitchers Veronica Burse (2-4) and Tahlia Snider worked the game from the circle, with Burse getting the loss in two and one thirds innings of work, giving up nine hits and six runs with no strikeouts.

Snider worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts in relief.

Saturday, FAMU will face Illinois State at 4:30 p.m. and FIU at 6:45 p.m.

Lady Hawks  Blanked At Camel Stampede

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – On day one of the Camel Stampede, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team went winless as they were defeated by Campbell and Marshall at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

UMES (4-6) dropped the opener versus Campbell, 8-0, then fell to The Herd, 11-0.

In game one, Maryland Eastern hung tough early on; however, could not get into a rhythm as sophomore Adrienne Guerra was the lone Hawk to register a hit.

Maryland Eastern Shore will square off against the same opponents tomorrow (March 5). UMES meets The Herd at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Camels at 8 p.m.

Savannah State No-Hits Grambling State En Route To Victory

IRONDALE, Ala. – The Savannah State University softball team (6-11) no-hit Grambling State University (2-11) during the first day of the Tiny Laster Tournament Friday.

Freshman pitcher Kasie Johnson (2-1) started the game and pitched the first four innings recording two strikeouts and a walk, while freshman pitcher Faith Dickerson pitched final three innings recording two strikeouts and a walk.

Freshman catcher Kelsey Cyrus led SSU at the plate going 2-for-2 with a run scored, while junior fright fielder Alexis Washington, junior designated hitter Amanda Hallman and sophomore shortstop each went 2-for-4.  Singleton added two runs scored and an RBI, while Harris added a run scored and Hallman recorded an RBI.

The Lady Tigers continue the tournament in Irondale, Ala., with a doubleheader against Alabama State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and finishes the tournament on Sunday with Grambling State at 11 a.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 p.m.
