BOSTON, Mass. – Hampton University head men's basketball coach Edward Joyner Jr. has been named a finalist for the 2016 Ben Jobe Award, which is awarded annually to the top minority coach in NCAA Div. I men's hoops.
A list of 21 finalists was unveiled on Wednesday.
Joyner led the Pirates to 21 wins this past season, and Hampton went 13-3 in MEAC play to win its first conference regular season title since 2001-02. The Pirates also defended their MEAC Tournament crown, marking the first time since 2001-02 that the Pirates went back-to-back.
Hampton went to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, taking on top-seeded Virginia in the first round. Joyner, the all-time winningest coach in Hampton Div. I history, now has two 20-win seasons with the Pirates.
He picked up his 100th career win on Nov. 17, 2015, when the Pirates defeated American 61-48.
Hampton has won three MEAC Tournament titles under Joyner.
The 2016 Ben Jobe Award recipient will be announced on Monday, April 4 in Houston, Texas – the site of the 2016 Final Four. The award is named after Ben Jobe, who coached at Southern University for 12 years, winning 209 games and making four NCAA Tournament appearances.
