NORFOLK, Va. — North Carolina Central University’s women’s tennis and volleyball teams have advanced to the Elite Eight round of Helper Helper’s Community Madness Tournament.
Helper Helper is a volunteer app that allows students to track volunteer efforts. The Community Madness Tournament has athletic teams, from over 100 NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III schools, competing to gain the most community service hours.
Much like March Madness, 64 teams were selected to compete, and now, only eight remain. North Carolina Central is the only institution to have two teams advance to the Elite Eight.
“We are very excited about North Carolina Central University student-athletes being engaged in helping their community,” said Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas. “For them to receive this kind of recognition speaks well for their consciousness about helping others. We wish them the best in their future community service endeavors.”
NCCU’s women’s volleyball team has completed 347 hours of community service so far, while the women’s tennis team has completed 122 hours.
Winning teams will receive a financial donation to a charity of their choice. The National Finals will be on Tuesday, April 5.
