Lady Pirates Fall to East Carolina

HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University women’s tennis team played its first match of the year at the Neilson-Screen Tennis  Stadium on Friday and lost 7-0 to East Carolina University.

At No. 1 and 2 singles, the Lady Pirates dropped a set by tiebreaker as Mariam Mitaishvii lost to Celia Ruiz 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1.  The next flight saw Cherise Slocombe drop a first-set tiebreaker to Annjia Beinsteina 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

In doubles, Hampton lost a tightly contested No. 1 doubles match as Mikaela Pierce and Mitaishvii fell 6-4 to Nicole LaDuca and Ruiz.  East Carolina won the other two matches 6-2 and 6-0 to claim the doubles point.

Next up for Hampton will be Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division matchup on March 26 at noon.

Savannah State Falls To Southern Miss

SAVANNAH, GA. – The Savannah State University women’s tennis (0-17) fell to University of Southern Mississippi (13-2) 7-0 Friday at the Tiger Tennis Courts.

The Lady Tigers lost all three doubles matches as SSU’s doubles duo of Sandy Lochu and Elizabeth Geronimo fell to USM’s doubles team of Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen 6-1 at the No. 1 doubles position, while SSU’s doubles team of Rachida Kateb and Jennyfer Vivas fell to USM’s doubles duo of Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles position and SSU’s doubles duo of Bria Burrows and Tiffany Williams fell to USM’s doubles duo of Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse 6-1 at the No. 3 doubles position.

Lochu fell to Kitchen 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position, while Geronimo fell to Pereira 6-0 in the first set and was trailing 3-0 in the second set before Geronimo was retired at the No. 2 singles position and Kateb fell to Jerse 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles position.

Burrows fell to Castella 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles position, while Vivas fell to Roca 6-0, 6-0 at the No. singles position and Williams fell to Marta Ruszczynska 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles position.

The Lady Tigers continue their three-game homestand with the final home match of the season against Western Carolina University on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Tiger Tennis Courts before traveling to Statesboro, Ga., for the final two matches of the season against the University of Louisiana at Monroe on April 2 at 2:30 p.m. and Georgia Southern on April 3 at noon.
