WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshman Benedikt Henning won his fifth straight singles match during Norfolk State’s 6-1 loss to No. 70 William & Mary on Friday morning in men’s tennis action at the Millie West Tennis Facility at William & Mary.
Henning topped Christian Cargill at the No. 1 spot in the lineup in a back-and-forth affair. Henning took the first set, 6-2, before Cargill won the second by the same 6-2 score. Then in the third set tiebreaker, Henning came out on top by a 10-7 margin.
The Tribe, though, won the other four contested singles matches and also won the doubles point due to NSU’s short-handed lineup. William & Mary improved to 10-3 on the season while dropping the Spartans to 2-11.
NSU did win at No. 1 doubles, where the sophomore duo of Antonio Pejic and Fatehdeep Singh defeated Scott Huang and Ryan Newman, 6-3. Cargill and Addison Appleby came away with the win at the second position over Henning and freshman Dan Dumitrascu, 6-4.
That win helped the Tribe win the doubles point, which included a default victory at the third position. William & Mary also won by default at No. 6 singles. The other four singles matches were taken in straight sets.
Appleby downed Pejic at the second spot in the lineup, 6-0 and 6-2, while Alec Miller defeated Dumitrascu at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-2.
In the other two matches, Singh fell to Lars de Boer, 6-4, 6-0, at the fourth spot, while freshman Flavian Fernandez suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Aidan Talcott at the No. 5 position.
NSU will next host Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex.
