Yellow Jackets Swarm Ahead Early to Beat Lady Eagles

ATLANTA, Ga.—North Carolina Central University’s relievers did not allow an earned run in 5 2/3 innings of work but the damage had already been done as host Georgia Tech defeated NCCU 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field.

The Yellow Jackets scored six runs in the first to grab control of the contest from the onset and defeat the Lady Eagles for a second straight day. Georgia Tech improved to 7-14 overall and NCCU fell to 1-20.

Freshman Breanna Carter pitched the first three innings of relief for the Lady Eagles and junior Jennifer Allison hurled the final 2 2/3 innings. GT’s last two runs in the first and its only other tally in the third were all unearned due to an error and a passed ball.

Junior Dominique Wilson had a single and a walk for NCCU and freshman Jassonah Pettaway collected her first collegiate base knock with a pinch-hit single in the sixth.

Senior London Booker (1-8) took the loss for the Lady Eagles allowing five runs (four earned) in the start.

NCCU continues its spring break road trip with a doubleheader at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Savannah State Falls to Syracuse in a Doubleheader Sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah State University softball team (10-15) snapped its four game winning streak falling to Syracuse 8-2 in game one and 7-0 in game two at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.

Junior right fielder Alexis Singleton led the Lady Tigers with a .500 (3-for-6) batting average, while junior pitcher Amanda Hallman batted .333 (2-for-6) with a run scored, a solo home run and two RBIs.

In the first game, Hallman led SSU with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run score, an RBI and a home run, while senior right fielder Molly Lillis and senior first baseman Torrian Wright each recorded a hit.  Hallman (5-7) pitched the first six innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts, while sophomore pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub pitched the final inning without giving up a hit.  

In the second game, Singleton went 3-for-3, while freshman third baseman Cortni Jones and sophomore center fielder Shelby Eccles each added a hit.  Eichenlaub went the distance giving up seven earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. 

The Lady Tigers stay at home with a doubleheader against University at Buffalo on Friday starting at noon at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.

Maryland Eastern Shore Rallies For A Doubleheader Split With Lady Bulldogs

ORANGEBURG, S.C.—Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team continued their spring break rodeo in Orangeburg, S.C. where they rallied in game two for a season split with the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.

UMES (5-11) erased an early deficit to win, 14-7, and snapped an eight-game slide. SC State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore in the first game, 4-2.

In game one, the Lady Hawks managed two runs on six hits. Senior Emily Diseroad posted her second multi-hit performance of the season, going 2-of-3 with two RBIs.

In the bottom half, South Carolina State rallied and reclaimed the lead with a three-run inning; thus, winning by the final score, 4-2.

In game two, nine Lady Hawks registered a hit while collecting a season-high 15 dingers overall. Senior outfielder Vanessa Gomez led the way, going 3-of-4 with two doubles and a career-high four runs scored. Freshman MacKenzie Brown and junior Ciara Schnyder each registered three RBIs in the victory.

UMES recorded four runs on six hits, capped off by triples from Allison Anderson and Daeshia Jones.

South Carolina State attempted one final rally, but sophomore hurdler Adrienne Guerra closed the door in relief as she picked up her third win on the season.

On March 17, Maryland Eastern Shore concludes it spring break rodeo in Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await.
