Tennis Recap: March 15

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman swept North Carolina Central in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division tennis on Tuesday, with the men’s team taking a 7-0 victory and the women’s team a 5-2 decision.

Both teams won their fourth straight match and set the stage for upcoming showdowns at South Carolina State April 1 and at Florida A&M April 9 to determine the top seed for the MEAC tournament April 19-22 in Norfolk, Va.

Alexander Chepik won his sixth straight singles match, and Alvaro Barrera won his team-leading 11th match as the Wildcats (8-9 overall, 2-0 MEAC) posted their second straight 7-0 victory. Walid Gtari registered his tenth win of the spring campaign.

The Lady Wildcats (9-9,3-0) reached .500 overall for the first time this season and won their 16th consecutive regular season conference match dating back to 2013.

Mina Matsuba improved to 27-0 lifetime in MEAC regular season matches, and Ancia Ifill remained unbeaten in league play this season (3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) after combining with Matsuba for a doubles win and delivering a strong singles performance. Alejandra Vidal also posted two wins while freshman Karen Romero improved to 3-0 in league singles play.

The Lady Wildcats host Georgia Southern Wednesday, while the men face Farliegh-Dickinson on Thursday.

Pirates Topple Falcons

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University men’s tennis team scored a home win on Tuesday afternoon taking down Fairmont State University 7-0 in a match held at Huntington Park Tennis Center.

Hampton (2-6) had an easy run through doubles as the No. 1 team of Matthew Foster-Estwick and Joshua McQueen won 8-3, while Peter Odegbami and Fedor Shirin took an 8-2 win at No. 2.  In the No. 3 slot, Charles Hudson and Miguel Suarez scored an 8-1 win to give Hampton the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

The singles matches were all straight-set victories by the Pirates with four of the six matches seeing the Pirates give up four games total.   Foster-Estwick was pushed in the first set at No. 1 singles against Micah Hornak but won 6-4, 6-2.   Odegbami took a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Matheus Rodrigues as Hampton won for the second time in a row this season.

The Pirates will return to action next Monday at 3pm when they host Longwood University.
