DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman’s tennis teams celebrated Senior Day Sunday with the men’s team sweeping Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T and the women downing Norfolk State 5-2.
The women’s match with North Carolina A&T was suspended due to rain and will resume Monday at 2 p.m.
Walid Gtari and Ancia Ifill each were recognized prior to the start of the North Carolina A&T match. Gtari won both his doubles matches and his singles victory was the clinching fourth point in the Wildcats’ 7-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division opener. Gtari and his teammates all posted straight set wins in singles as the Wildcats won their third straight.
Earlier, the Wildcats (7-9, 1-0 MEAC) posted a 5-2 victory over Norfolk State, who competes in the MEAC’s Northern Division. Alexander Chepik won both his singles and doubles match to pace the Wildcats.
In the women’s match, Ifill and Alejandra Vidal combined on a tough 7-5 victory over Mafalda Lhorca/Andrea Macchiavello at No. 2 doubles that decided the doubles points for Bethune-Cookman.
Vidal came back and downed Lhorca 7-5, 7-5 at No.6 singles that clinched the Lady Wildcat victory.
Mina Matsuba, Matea Roki and Karen Romero also won at singles for Bethune-Cookman (7-9,1-0). Matsuba and Roki improved to 11-2 as a doubles tandem.
