SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (10-13) swept the doubleheader against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent University of Maryland Eastern Shore 2-1 in game one and 8-2 in six innings in game two in a nonconference battle at the Lady Tiger Softball Field Sunday.
Senior first baseman Torrian Wright led the team with a perfect 1.000 batting average going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a solo home run in both games, while freshman third baseman Cortni Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and five RBIs. Wright recorded a 2.500 slugging percentage and a 1.000 on-base percentage, while Jones recorded a 1.667 slugging percentage and a .333 on-base percentage.
Sophomore center fielder Shelby Eccles went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple, while junior left fielder Chasney Jenkins and sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris each went 2-for-5. Jenkins added two runs scored and an RBI, while Harris added a run scored.
In game one, Wright went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, while Jones went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and junior pitcher Amanda Hallman (5-6) went the distance giving up an earned run on four hits with five strikeouts.
UMES was led by Allison Anderson going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Trenece Nash and Samantha Casarez each recorded a hit and Casarez scored the only run. Adrienne Guerra (2-5) went the distance giving up two earned runs on three hits and three walks.
In game two, Jenkins led the Lady Tigers going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Jones went 1-for-1 with one run scored and four RBIs. Freshman pitcher Kasie Johnson (3-1) picked up the win pitching the first 5.0 innings giving up two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts, while sophomore pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub finished up the game pitching the final inning, not allowing a hit with a strikeout.
The Lady Hawks were led by Vanessa Gomez, Anderson, Tesharra Hill, Nash, and Casarez who all recorded a hit, while Kaitlyn Hitch (2-4) picked up the loss pitching the first 2.2 innings giving up five earned runs on six hits, while Abria Tinsley pitched the final 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs on five hits.
The Lady Tigers host Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Syracuse with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
