Spartans Pull Away from Howard

NORFOLK, Va. — Howard cut a 16-point deficit down to three with nine and a half minutes left in the second half, but the Norfolk State men’s basketball team outscored the Bison 25-10 the rest of the way in an 84-66 victory on Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

Senior D’Shon Taylor had his second straight game with 20 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line to go with a team-best eight rebounds. The Spartans also got a strong game from sophomore Jordan Butler, who tallied 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds and three blocks.

Along with Taylor and Butler, NSU also got solid performances from senior Charles Oliver (16 points, career-high eight rebounds) and junior Preston Bungei (12 points, 3-of-6 shooting, seven rebounds). They helped NSU finish with a 43-37 edge on the glass.

Senior Jeff Short had nine points and a career-high tying seven assists. Sophomore Devonte Banner also scored nine points on 3-of-4 3-point shooting with two steals. Only six players appeared in the scoring column for NSU.

Marcel Boyd tallied a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds with three blocks, while MEAC leading scorer James Daniel had 15 points on just 3-of-13 shooting. Tyler Stone ended with six points, 12 boards and two blocks.

NSU will close out the regular season Thursday at home when the Spartans host Hampton for the Battle of the Bay at 8 p.m.

Pirates Clinch MEAC Top Seed with Win Over Hornets

HAMPTON, Va. — With a 79-65 win over Delaware State in its home finale on Monday evening at the Convocation Center, the Hampton University men’s basketball team clinched the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season title.

It is the first such title for the Pirates (18-9, 13-2 MEAC) since 2002.

Quinton Chievous had a monster game to lead four Pirates in double figures, tying his career high of 29 points on 13-for-17 shooting and grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. Lawrence Cooks came off the bench to add 16 points and four assists.

Brian Darden added 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and Reginald Johnson, Jr. had 13 points.

Jervon Pressley grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

DeAndre Haywood led the Hornets with 18 points.

The Pirates will close out the regular season on Thursday at Norfolk State at 8 p.m.

Eagles Close Home Season with Win Over Savannah State

DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University will leave McDougald-McLendon Arena in good fashion after recording a 61-44 win over Savannah State University on Monday, Feb. 29.

The seniors for NCCU (12-17, 7-8 MEAC) played a big role in the win, as Dante Holmes and Jeremiah Ingram both dropped in 15 points.  Ingram pulled down a career-high 15 boards and became the first player to record 15 points and 15 rebounds in a game since Jordan Parks in 2013.  

NCCU held SSU to just 30.4-percent shooting from the floor, the second-lowest it has allowed a team this season after a 28.8-percent lockdown against the same Tigers in Savannah, Georgia on Jan. 11.

The Eagles close out the regular season at the Corbett Center against North Carolina A&T State University on Thursday, March 3, looking to even the season series.

Bethune-Cookman Tops North Carolina A&T State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Mario Moody scored 20 points, and Ricky Johnson and LaRon Smith 11 each as Bethune-Cookman won its fifth straight with a 62-52 victory over North Carolina A&T State Monday night.

The Wildcats (14-16 overall, 10-5 conference) cliched a first-round bye in next week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament with the home finale/Senior Night triumph.

Smith and Diamante Lewis each grabbed seven rebounds for the Wildcats, who finished their home schedule 9-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.

Beckford had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead four Aggies in double figures.

The Wildcats play at South Carolina State Thursday in their regular season finale.
