Howard Knocks Off Hampton In Overtime
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas had yet another monster game at Burr Gymnasium on Monday evening, but it wasn’t enough as Howard defeated the Hampton University women’s basketball team 83-77 in overtime.
The Lady Pirates (10-13, 8-2 MEAC) had their six-game winning streak snapped and lost to Howard for the first time in the last 16 meetings between the two teams.
Tate-DeFreitas dropped a season-high 37 points, recording her fourth 30-point game of the season, on 11-for-31 shooting and a 13-for-17 effort from the free throw line. She also grabbed nine rebounds, while freshman guard K’lynn Willis added 14 points.
Sophomore forward Mikayla Sayle grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, while senior guard Kristine Rose grabbed 10 boards.
Te’Shya Heslip led Howard with a triple-double of 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Late Free Throws Lifts Savannah State Over Coppin State
SAVANNAH, Ga. – With the score tied at 55, junior guard Kenyata Hendrix drove to the basket and picked up the foul to send her to line with three seconds. Hendrix nailed both of the free throws and Coppin State’s final shot bounced off the rim to give the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (7-15, 4-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 57-55 win over Coppin State University (7-13, 4-5 MEAC) in Tiger Arena Monday night.
Junior guard Rhianna Warren recorded a career-high 19 points to lead all scorers on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-6 shooting from the 3-point line and with a career-high eight rebounds, while Hendrix added 17 points and six rebounds with three assists and two blocks. The four made 3-pointers by Hendrix gives her 127 career made 3-pointers, which moves her into second place.
The Lady Eagles were led by Keena Samuels with 13 points and added eight rebounds, while Genesis Lucas added 11 points, Janelle Lane added 10 points and four rebounds and Omaah Tayong added eight points and nine rebounds.

Norfolk State Pulls Second Straight Win
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Koryn Lawrence poured in a season-high 21 points to lead Norfolk State to its second consecutive win, a 74-63 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore at the Hytche Center on Monday night.
Lawrence hit 8-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals for NSU (2-19, 2-9 MEAC), while Kiara Phillips added 12 points and Dominique Harper 11.
Ciani Byrom led UMES with 22 points and Moengaroa Subritzky added 11.

North Carolina Central Scores Road Win At Johnson & Wales
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A strong performance throughout the lineup and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch led the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team to a 68-58 non-conference road win at Johnson & Wales University Monday evening in the Wildcat Center.
The Lady Eagles soared out to a 25-5 lead after the first quarter and then made 8 of 8 free throws in the final 75 seconds to hold off a late Wildcats comeback attempt. NCCU (4-16 Overall) earned its first road win of the season and snapped a 27-game losing streak on the road dating back to a season-opening win two years ago at Western Carolina University (W, 65-59 on Nov. 14, 2014).
Senior forward Tisha Dixon scored a game-high 19 points on an impressive 8 of 9 shooting performance from the field. Freshman Deja McCain helped NCCU dominate from the post by bucketing nine points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. All three marks by the duo were new career-high game totals.
A trio of Wildcats scored in double figures: sophomore Vanderia Shackelford poured in 19 points, freshman Amber Gladden recorded 16 points and sophomore Jaquana Pauling chipped in 10 points.
