Short Leads Norfolk State To Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Jeff Short scored seven of his 19 points in overtime , including the last four to help Norfolk State outlast Howard, 99-92 in double overtime in a Mid-Eastern Athletic men’s game at Burr Gymnasum.

Howard’s junior guard, James Daniel went to work and rallied his team.  The nation’s leading scorer at 27 points per game, poured in 32 points in the second half and extra periods to bring his team back.

Norfolk State featured a balanced attack as D’Shon Taylor led the way with 22, Zaynah Robinson and Short each with 19 Alex Long with 12 off the bench.

The Bison were led by Daniel with a game-high 34, Damon Collins with 20, Marcel Boyd witn a double double of 12 points and 17 rebounds and Tuler Stone with 18.

Howard held a huge rebounding advantage of 50-33 but the Bison gave up 32 points off 25 turnovers.

Pirates Fall to Hawks on the Road

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—The Hampton University men’s basketball team fell for just the second time in conference play on Saturday afternoon, as Maryland Eastern Shore won 73-70 in the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Pirates fell to 13-9 overall and 8-2 in MEAC play on the season.

Reginald Johnson, Jr. led three Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 5-for-16 shooting, hitting three 3-pointers and dishing out a team-high four assists. Quinton Chievous added 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.

Brian Darden added 11 points. Jervon Pressley blocked a team-high four shots.

The Pirates shot 39.3-percent (22-for-56) from the floor and hit six of their 30 3-pointers (20.0-percent). Hampton also struggled from the free throw line, going 20-for-30 (66.7-percent).

UMES (8-16, 5-4 MEAC) shot 37.5-percent (21-for-56) from the floor and made four of 16 3-pointers. The Hawks made 27-of-38 free throws (71.1-percent) and out-rebounded the Pirates 43-35.

Dominique Elliott led four Hawks in double figures with 23 points.

The Pirates will be in Washington, D.C. on Monday to take on rival Howard at 8 p.m.

Next up for the Hawks is a home game Monday (Feb. 8) against Norfolk State (11-13, 7-2 MEAC).

NCCU Stunned By North Carolina A&T State in Overtime

DURHAM, N.C. It took five extra minutes to decide a winner, and North Carolina Central University was outlasted by North Carolina A&T State University in the added period for a 67-63 final tally from McDougald-McLendon Arena on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Rashaun Madison hit a clutch three-pointer with 1:20 to go in regulation to force overtime with both sides level at 61.

Kyle Benton led all players with a career-high 13 rebounds along with nine points in the contest.  Madison finished with eight points, and Patrick Cole put in seven points and five rebounds, with three assists.

The Eagles will ready for their next conference game at home against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Bethune-Cookman Knocks Off Delaware State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Diamante Lewis scored 21 points as Bethune-Cookman led from start from finish in Saturday's 85-56 win over Delaware State Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Potts added 14, Quinton Forrest 11 and LaRon Smith double-doubled with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Wildcats (9-15 overall, 6-4 MEAC) extended their winning streak to three for the first time since 2013.

Devin Morgan led the Hornets (9-15, 2-6) with 15 points.

B-CU faces North Carolina Central Saturday.
