Wildcats rally to defeat Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – With Greg Almeida delivering the deciding point, Bethune-Cookman once again called it a comeback Wednesday as the Wildcats downed Embry-Riddle 5-4.

The Eagles (1-1) took two of the three doubles matches and upped their lead to 4-1 before the Wildcats (2-1) rallied for their second come-from-behind victory in as many outings. Bethune-Cookman erased a 3-2 deficit to beat Campbell 4-3 on Friday.

Alvara Barrera, who combined with Justin Hall on what would prove to be an important doubles victory, started the comeback with a 6-4,6-2 decision over Roberto Cuellar at No. 6 singles. Walid Gtari and Jose Plazas each took a three-set victory, with both rallying from losing the first set, to tie the match at 4-4.

Almeida,  a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, defeated Luke de Caires 6-7,6-4,6-4 at No. 5 for the deciding point.

The men’s victory gave Bethune-Cookman a sweep of the two matches between the Daytona Beach schools. The women won 6-3 on Tuesday.

The Wildcat men are in Ft. Myers this weekend to face Florida Gulf Coast and Marquette while the Lady Wildcats meet FIU Sunday in DeLand.
