OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Savannah State University softball first baseman Torrian Wright was selected for the “Watch List” for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, announced by the Amateur Softball Association of American and USA Softball Wednesday afternoon.
A total of 50 student-Athletes were named to the preseason “Watch List,” which includes 25 seniors, 15 juniors and 10 sophomores, while freshman are ineligible for consideration.
Eight athletes on the Top 50 “Watch List” will compete as a member of the 2016 USA softball Women’s National Team this summer, while an additional six athletes will also compete for the Red, White and Blue this summer as a member of the 2016 USA Softball Women’s Elite Team.
The Top 25 Finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be announced April 13, while the top 10 finalists will be announced May 11 and the Top 3 announced May 25. The 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 31.
Wright started the preseason named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year in January for the third straight season and was named the College Sports Madness MEAC Field Player of the Year a week later.
Wright has also been named the MEAC Postseason Player of the year for the last two years and was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year after her freshman season.
Last year, The McDonough, Ga., native led the National Collegiate Athletic Association in batting average (.566), slugging percentage (1.229), on-base percentage (.748) and walks per game (1.44).
Wright also led SSU in runs scored (43), home runs (17), runs batted in (50), total bases (102) and walks (56).
In conference play, the first basemen led the team with a .633 (19-for-30) batting average with two doubles, six home runs, 22 RBIs and 20 walks. Wright also sported a 1.300 slugging percentage and a .784 on-base percentage.
The Lady Tigers opened the 2016 season with a five-team tournament, hosting Western Carolina, Jacksonville State, Drexel and College of Charleston in 11 games over three days in the 1st Annual Tiger Classic at the Lady Tiger Softball Field from Feb. 12-14.
