Men's Basketball Recap: February 2

HAMPTON, Va.—For much of Tuesday night’s affair against NAIA-level Washington Adventist, the Hampton University basketball team found itself in an unfamiliar position: playing from behind. But a late 15-0 run, and some frantic defense at the end, netted the Pirates the 69-67 home win.

Hampton improved to 13-8 on the season with their eighth win in nine games.

Reginald Johnson, Jr. led three Pirates in double figures with 30 points, going 9-for-20 from the floor and hitting three 3-pointers. It was his second 30-point game of the season, and Johnson also had a team-high five steals.

Lawrence Cooks and Akim Mitchell each had 12 points, which in Mitchell’s case were a career high. Cooks also had a career- and team-high 13 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Jervon Pressley added seven points and nine rebounds.

The Pirates shot 32.8-percent (21-for-64) from the floor and made five of their 18 3-pointers (27.8-percent). Hampton also made 22 of its 30 free throws (73.3-percent) and out-rebounded Washington Adventist 52-40.

The Shock shot 33.9-percent (21-for-62) from the floor and made seven of 25 3-pointers (28.0-percent).

Tyrus Fleetwood led Washington Adventist with 22 points.

The Pirates will be in Princess Anne, Md. on Saturday to resume MEAC play against Maryland Eastern Shore at 4 p.m.
