UMES' Barrett To Be Inducted Into Coppin State Hall of Fame

BALTIMORE, Md. — Prior to his time on The Shore, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) head track & field coach Ernest Barrett worked at Coppin State in Baltimore, where he assisted in building some memorable teams with the Eagles. Now those teams, Barrett included, are slated to be honored at the school’s 5th annual Hall of Fame Induction.

The ceremony will be held in the Physical Education Complex’s Auxiliary Gym on Coppin’s campus this Friday night, as part of Homecoming festivities.

Barrett will be honored for his work with the Coppin men’s and women’s cross country teams that won MEAC titles in the 1990s. After an All-American career at George Mason, he joined Coach Donald Webster’s staff in Baltimore, already in the middle of their successful run. Along the way, he helped guide several of the 23 members of the cross country teams, some of whom won All-American honors and ran in the Olympic trials.

After these champion athletes graduated and continued their careers, Barrett continued on as an assistant at Coppin until 1999 when he was hired by UMES as the head coach.
