Bethune-Cookman Falls 4-3 To Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – Stetson denied Bethune-Cookman a Volusia County sweep Wednesday with a 4-3 decision at a windswept Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Down 3-1, the Wildcats (1-5) rallied to a 3-3 tie with singles victories from Makea Roki and Alejandra Vidal, but the Hatters (3-3) got a 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 victory from Evenline Lepinay over Mina Matsuba at No. 1 singles to take the match.

Bethune-Cookman took the doubles point convincingly on wins from Matsuba/Roki and Vidal/Ancia Ifill. Hilary Hanton and Karen Romero were up 5-3 in their match when play was suspended.

This was the second consecutive 4-3 loss for Bethune-Cookman, who defeated nearby Embry-Riddle earlier this month.

Bethune-Cookman returns to action Saturday with two matches – a 10 a.m. meeting with Mercer and a 3 p.m. tilt with Savannah State that opens defense of the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship. An unveiling ceremony for championship banners honoring last year and the 1999-2001 team will take place Saturday at a time yet to be determined.
