Pirates Defeat Hornets for Third Straight Win

DOVER, Del.—With four players in double figures, and yet another double-double from Quinton Chievous, the Hampton University men’s basketball team upended Delaware State 82-72 Monday night in Memorial Hall.

The Pirates (16-9, 11-2 MEAC) picked up their third straight win.

Chievous led the Pirates with 21 points and 19 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season, while Reginald Johnson, Jr. added 16 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Brian Darden chipped in 11 points and dished out five assists, and Dionte Adams added 10 points.

Darden is seven points shy of 1,000 for his career.

The Pirates shot 44.6-percent (25-for-66) from the floor hit eight of 23 3-pointers (34.8-percent). Hampton was 72.7-percent (24-for-33) from the free throw line and dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Hornets 48-28.

Delaware State (7-21, 5-8 MEAC) shot 40.3-percent (25-for-62) from the floor, thanks to a 50.5-percent effort (17-for-33) in the second half. The Hornets struggled from the floor in the first half, going just 8-for-29 (27.6-percent).

Devin Morgan led the Hornets with 31 points.

The Pirates will return home on Saturday to take on rival Howard at 6 p.m.

Eaves Leads South Carolina State To Win Over Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Eric Eaves came off the bench to score 19 points and lead four player in double figures as South Carolina State got past Howard 71-63 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at Burr Gymnasium.

In the tightly contested affair, Eaves was the difference make down the stretch, scoring his team’s last five points on a three-point play and a key basket down the stretch with the shot clocking winding down.

Eaves connected on 7-of-9 from the field on an array of shots.  Gabriel McCray (18 points), Ed Stephens (15) and Tashombe Riley (10 points) all came with baskets during various stretches of the game.

Daniel led all scorers with 24 points while Marcel Boyd recorded his ninth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Damon Collins contributed 10 for the hosts who dropped their seventh in the last eight games while SC State has won six of its last seven.

Hawks drop double OT stunner to FAMU

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—It took 50 minutes of basketball to decide a winner on Monday night between the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Florida A&M University. But by the time the second overtime was over, it was the Rattlers who were celebrating the win.

Craig Bowman finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Rattlers, while Malcolm Bernard had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Ravenal chipped in 10.

Martin led the way for the Hawks with 24 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Dominique Elliott had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes, before he fouled out with two minutes left in the first overtime.

Bakari Copeland scored 14 points shooting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, and grabbed five rebounds. Ryan Andino chipped in 12 points.

The Hawks host Delaware State on Feb. 27, before finishing out the regular season on the road at Morgan State on March 3.

Bethune-Cookman Edges Out Stetson

DELAND, Fla.—Jordan  Potts scored 27 points, including a go-ahead 4-point play with 13 seconds left as Bethune-Cookman claimed a 96-94 instant classic overtime win over Stetson, Monday night.

Randy Holmes scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, and Mario Moody double-doubled with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats (12-16) won their third game in a row.

Ricky Johnson and  Diamante Lewis each finished with 11 points, and LaRon Smith had 10 as the Wildcats won for the third straight time after trailing by 10 points.

Derick Newton had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Hatters.

Bethune-Cookman hosts North Carolina Central Saturday at 4 p.m.

Spartans Overcome Early Deficit, Top Coppin State 85-77

NORFOLK, Va.—Down by 14 just 10 minutes into the game, the Norfolk State men’s basketball team went on a 28-6 run between the first and second halves and then held off a hot-shooting Coppin State squad in an 85-77 win on Monday night in front of an ESPNU audience at Joseph Echols Hall.

Senior Jeff Short led the way for NSU with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. He made all six of his free throw attempts and also shot 5-of-12 from the field, part of a 31-of-64 effort (48.4-percent) for the Spartans in the game.

Senior D’Shon Taylor shot 5-of-10 from the field and tallied 15 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Both senior Charles Oliver (12 points, 4-of-8 shooting) and sophomore Jordan Butler (11 points, 5-of-8 shooting) also scored in double figures. Butler also tallied two blocks and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. NSU held a 42-32 edge on the glass.

Christian Kessee led the way for Coppin State with 18 points. Mufaro Murinda and Josh Treadwell each had 17 points, including 15 in the second half for Murinda. Trevon Seymore added 15 points and eight assists.

The Spartans will turn right around and head to Morgan State for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday for the last road game of the regular season.
