Lady Bears Knock Off N.C. Central To Takeover First-Place In MEAC Standings
BALTIMORE, Md.- Durham, North Carolina native Zuri White recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds and 10 points, to help the Lady Bears to a 66-55 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over visiting North Carolina Central (NCCU) on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
Braennan Farrar finished with 15 points, seven assists and four steals, all game highs for the Lady Bears (12-13, 10-3 MEAC), who improved to 7-3 at home. Benedicta Makakala added 10 points, while Lexus Spears and Tykyrah Williams each added eight points apiece for Morgan State, who won their fourth straight at home and improved to 5-1 in MEAC play at Hill Field House this season.
It wasn’t pretty all the time, but in the end the Lady Bears ended a two-game losing skid to NCCU and also got some help from their crosstown rivals at Coppin State. Morgan State’s win, coupled with Bethune-Cookman’s loss to Florida A&M, along with Coppin State’s four-point upset win over league-leader Hampton on Saturday, has the Lady Bears sitting in sole possession of first-place in the league standings.

Lupoe's Career Day Not Enough As Hampton Falls To Coppin State
BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe had a career day offensively on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex, but Coppin State used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Hampton University women’s basketball team 68-64.
The Lady Pirates fell to 11-14 overall and 9-3 in MEAC play.
Lupoe scored a career-high 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds and going 3-for-5 from the free throw line. Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Tate-DeFreitas is now third in program history in career scoring, with 1,800 career points. She is 167 points behind second-place LaShondra Dixon (1,967 points, 1999-2003).
Coppin State (10-15, 7-6 MEAC) shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the floor, despite hitting just one of seven 3-pointers. The Eagles were also 19-for-25 (76.0 percent) from the free throw line. Amber Griffin and Jordan Swails each had 17 points for the hosts.

Savannah State Completes Fourth-Quarter Comeback To Defeat Howard
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Howard University (5-20, 3-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) leading by six points, 49-43, after three quarters, the Savannah State University (8-16, 5-8 MEAC) outscored HU 26-15 in the final quarter to defeat Howard 69-64 Saturday in Burr Gymnasium by using an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter.
Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix led SSU with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists, while junior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with 12 rebounds and added 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor. Caprisha Treadwell recorded a career-high with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting with six rebounds and three blocks.
The Bison was led by Victoria Gonzales with 16 points and added seven rebounds and Imani Bailey added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Te’Shya Heslip added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Aldridge, Pollard Lead Lady Hornets Past Norfolk State
DOVER, Del. – Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (8-17, 5-7 MEAC) defeated the visiting Norfolk State Spartans (2-21, 2-11 MEAC) for a much needed 64-61 victory, thanks to guard Mikah Aldridge pouring in a career-high 26 points and forward NaJai Pollard chipping in with 17 points.
This win for the Lady Hornets not only snapped a four-game skid, but it resulted in their first victory over Norfolk State since a 58-48 triumph on Feb. 23, 2013. The Spartans, on the other hand, have now dropped two out of its last four after starting the season at 0-19.

Solid Free Throw Shooting Lifts Maryland Eastern Shore Over South Carolina State
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team made 26 of its game-high 40 free throw attempts to defeat South Carolina State 61-55 on Saturday afternoon at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Lady Hawks, who made more free throws in the second half (17) than the Lady Bulldogs attempted for the entire game (15), were led in scoring by Ciani Byrom with 17 points. Keyera Eaton had 12 points, while Taryana Kelly had 12 rebounds.
Brittany Drumgoole paced the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points. Amber Howard added 11 points and Jasmine Coleman grabbed a game- and career-high 18 rebounds.
