Hawks’ Homecoming comeback comes up short against Bulldogs

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — After a second-half comeback that saw it hold the lead as late as the 3:16 mark, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore ended up dropping Saturday’s Homecoming battle against South Carolina State 62-58.

The Hawks (8-20, 5-8 MEAC) trailed 32-25 at the break, but in the second half senior co-captains Devin Martin and Dominique Elliott tried to put the team on their backs.

The duo combined to score 30 of the team’s 33 points and the Hawks outscored South Carolina State 33-30 after the break, but it wasn’t enough.

The Bulldogs (15-12 overall, 10-3 MEAC) were led by Tashombe Riley’s 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Eric Eaves scored 15 off the bench. Ed Stephens added 10 as guard play for SCSU was key.

DouDou Gueye started at center for the Bulldogs, but gave way to Darryl Palmer who was a better matchup against the Hawks. Palmer finished with five points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks in 22 minutes, but made things difficult in the lane for Eastern Shore.

The Hawks were without junior point guard Thomas Rivera who was sitting one game after a flagrant foul against Howard, and freshman point guard Ahmad Frost is still out with an injury. Mark Seylan started at the point for the Hawks who had 12 assists as a team with several faces taking a turn at running the point.

Elliott finished with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds and Martin scored 15 points and grabbed four boards.

The Hawks will host Florida A&M on Monday and Delaware state on Feb. 27, before finishing out the regular season on the road at Morgan State on March 3.
