Lady Eagles Drop Two on First Day of Upstate Invite
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team allowed 28 combined hits in a pair of non-conference losses on opening day of the Update Invitational Friday.
The Lady Eagles (0-4 Overall) suffered a 14-0 loss to host USC Upstate in their first game of the day and then allowed a close game to slip away late in a 6-1 loss to Kent State University in the nightcap.
NCCU will continue play in the Upstate Invitational with two games at Furman’s Pepsi Stadium on Saturday. The Lady Eagles will play Oakland University at 11 a.m., before a rematch against Kent State at 5 p.m.
Against South Carolina Upstate, sophomore outfielder Kendsey Chappelear ignited the hosts from the leadoff position with four hits, three runs and a stolen base. Senior third baseman Amy Szymanowski had the Spartans power bat with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the first.
NCCU was held to just three hits by Upstate’s pitching staff. Junior Dominique Wilson had the Lady Eagles lone extra-base hit with a leadoff double in the second. NCCU also threatened in the top of the third when seniors Markell Wylie and Jenny Tracy had consecutive two-out singles to center.
Against, Kent State, Wilson went 2-for-3 and drove in a run but the Lady Eagles lost to another undefeated team after allowing four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Savannah State Splits the First Day of USC Upstate Tournament
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Savannah State University softball team (2-5) split the first day of the USC Upstate tournament Fridayat the Pepsi Stadium by defeating University of Akron (1-6) 6-3 and fell to Furman University (2-6) 3-1.
Freshman third baseman Cortni Jones went 3-for-6 with three RBIs in both games, while junior right fielder Alexis Singleton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI and junior designated hitter Amanda Hallman 3-for-7 with an RBI.
Hallman (1-1) picked her first win of the season against Akron going the distance giving up three runs and scattered nine hits and recorded three strikeouts, while sophomore pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub (0-2) pitched 4.0 innings giving up three runs and six hits against Furman.
Against Akron, Jones went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Against Furman, Singleton and Hallman each went 2-for-3 with Singleton recorded the lone RBI of the game for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Tigers finish the USC Upstate Tournament with Akron at 11 a.m., followed by host USC Upstate at 3 p.m.
