ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The Savannah State University women’s tennis (0-6) dropped the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener to South Carolina State University (1-4) at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Elizabeth Geronimo recorded the lone singles win for the Lady Tigers by defeating SCSU’s Oleksandra Filippova in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position.
The Lady Tigers lost the doubles point after losing at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position. SSU’s doubles team of freshman Rachida Kateb and junior Jennyfer Vivas fell to SCSU’s doubles duo of Marketa Marcanikova and Andjela Vasic 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles position, while SSU’s doubles duo of junior Bria Burrows and senior Tiffany Williams fell to SCSU doubles team of Filippova and Claudia Roca 6-0 at the No. 3 doubles position.
Junior Sandy Lochu and Geronimo were trailing SCSU’s doubles duo Intissar Rassif and Dakota Brown 5-4 when the doubles point was called since the Lady Bulldogs had won the point.
Lochu fell to Rassif at the No. 1 singles position 6-3, 6-2, while Kateb fell to Vasic 7-2, 7-6 (3) at the No. 3 singles position, and Burrows fell to Marcanikova 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles position.
Vivas won the first set against Brown 7-5, but fell in the second set, 6-1, and the third set 1-0 (7), while Williams fell in straight set to Carla Petreanu 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles position.
