WASHINGTON, D.C. — Imani Bailey scored a team-high 16 points and Te'Shya Heslip added 12 but Ciani Byrom proved to be too much as she poured in a career-high 27 points as University of Maryland Eastern Shore cruised to a 79-57 win over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Burr Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Lady Bison hung with the Lady Hawks through the first half and only trailed by six at 38-32 despite 15 points by Byrom. Heslip and Bailey combined for 20 points but Heslip got into early foul trouble and impacted on the productivity of the Howard offense.
Byrom led a third quarter charge that helped her team outscore the hosts 19-9 and take a commanding 57-41 lead at the end of three. From there UMES (8-16, 6-6 in the MEAC) put the game in cruise control.
The Lady Bison aided their cause missing 26 of their second half shots for 25 percent from the floor. The Lady Hawks meanwhile connected on 55 percent (29 of 53) for the game.
Bailey finished with 16, Erin Blaine with 14 and nine rebounds, Heslip with 12 and Jasmine Hill who was also in foul trouble, with 11.
UMES got 14 points from Moengaroa Subrizky, 10 from Taylor Thompson off the bench and 11 rebounds from Taryana Kelly.
