Big Second Half Lifts Pirates over Morgan State
HAMPTON, Va.—Despite leading by just one at the half Monday night at the HU Convocation Center, the Hampton University men’s basketball team ran past Morgan State 87-79 in front of a national ESPNU audience.
The Pirates improved to 15-9 overall and 10-2 in MEAC play.
Reginald Johnson, Jr. and Quinton Chievous each had 20 points to lead the Pirates; Johnson also dished out a career-high eight assists, while Chievous grabbed 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
Jervon Pressley came off the bench to record his third double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also had both of the Pirates’ blocks.
The Pirates shot 29-for-63 (46.0-percent) from the floor and hit six of their 18 3-pointers. Hampton was also 71.9-percent (23-for-32) from the free throw line, and the Pirates outrebounded Morgan State 45-36.
Morgan State (5-19, 3-8 MEAC) shot 40-percent (28-for-70) from the floor – going just 13-for-36 (36.1-percent) in the second half – and going 5-for-19 (26.3-percent) from distance.
Rasean Simpson and Phillip Carr each had 21 points for the Bears.

Hornets Hold Off Eagles for First Road Win of the Season
Baltimore, Md.—Delaware State received 51 points from its bench to key a 71-67 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC contest at the CSU Physical Education Complex this evening.
The Hornets won their second straight, and first on the road this season, to improve to 6-20 overall and 4-7 in the MEAC. The Eagles fell to 6-18 and 4-8.
Aric Dickerson and DeAndre Haywood came off the bench to lead DSU with 13 points each. Dickerson was 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 on three-point shots.
Devin Morgan led the Hornet starters with 10 points, while reserves Kavon Waller and Joseph Lewis added eight points each, and Todd Hughes chipped in with seven off the bench.
Delaware State was 28-for-57 from the field (49.1-percent), including 8-of-16 on three-point shots (50-percent).
Coppin State shot 39.6-percent for the game (21-for-53) and 23.8-percent from beyond the arc (5-for-21).
The Eagles won the rebound battle 42-28, but the Hornets had fewer turnovers. DSU turned the ball over 15 times, while Coppin State had 20 miscues.

Eagles Strike from Distance to Top Florida A&M
DURHAM, N.C.—North Carolina Central University knocked down 11 3-pointers with five coming from Dante Holmes as the Eagles picked up their second-straight win with a 79-74 decision over Florida A&M on Monday, at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Kyle Benton knocked in 12 points with four boards, and Patrick Cole picked up nine points and five rebounds, and also tied for the game-high with three steals. Jeremiah Ingram had nine points as well, and C.J. Wiggins was the third Eagle with nine points, and also added six assists.
NCCU will make up a snow-postponed game at Coppin State on Thursday, Feb. 18 and will stay in Baltimore to take on Morgan State on Saturday, Feb. 20 as originally scheduled.
