Lady Pirates Regain First Place With Win Over Morgan State

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team bounced back on Monday at the HU Convocation Center, defeating Morgan State 60-47 to reclaim first place in the MEAC standings.

The Lady Pirates (11-13, 9-2 MEAC) have won 12 straight over the Bears.

Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas was the only Lady Pirate in double figures, pouring in 23 points on 9-for-23 shooting and grabbing five steals. She scored 18 of those points in the first half, and Tate-DeFreitas is 12 points shy of third place on the program’s all-time scoring list.

Freshman guard K’lynn Willis added nine points, while sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe poured in eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 33.3 percent (18-for-54) from the floor, hitting two of their 11 3-pointers and going 13-for-21 (61.9 percent) from the free throw line. Hampton also turned 35 Morgan State turnovers into 31 points.

Morgan State (11-13, 9-3 MEAC) shot just 26.4 percent (14-for-53) from the floor and made six of 17 3pointers (35.3 percent). The Bears also went 13-for-21 from the free throw line and held a 48-37 edge in rebounding. Tykyrah Williams led the Bears with 16 points.

Late Rally Leads Florida A&M To Road Win

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University entered the fourth quarter only trailing by three points before visiting Florida A&M University outscored the hosts 20-8 in the final 10 minutes to seal a 69-54 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s victory Monday evening in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Four Rattlers scored in double figures and FAMU (13-11 Overall, 7-4 MEAC) used a 27-12 advantage on points off turnovers to complete the season series sweep of NCCU (4-18, 2-9).

Junior Morgan Jones and freshman Chantal Thomas led the Lady Eagles – who were decked out in pink uniforms in their support of the Play 4Kay initiative in the fight against women’s cancers – with 12 points and three assists apiece.

Senior guard Khaderja poured in a game-high 17 points for Florida A&M. She was supported well with sophomore Dawn King connecting for 15 points, junior Alicia McCray sinking 12 points and senior Olivia Antilla tallying 11 points.

Coppin State Holds On For Win Over Delaware State

BALTIMORE, Md.  - Despite playing with only eight players, the Delaware State women's basketball team (7-17, 4-7 MEAC) put forth a valiant effort Monday evening on the road, highlighted by forward NaJai Pollard scoring 14 of her career-high 26 points (8-of-19) in the fourth quarter, but the Coppin State Eagles (8-15, 5-6 MEAC) managed to hold on for a high-scoring 84-79 victory.

With this defeat, the Hornets not only dropped their fourth in a row for the second time this season, but it resulted in DSU's sixth straight loss to the Eagles.  Coppin State, meanwhile, snapped a four-game skid to pick up its first win since defeating Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe UMES at home on Jan. 30, 61-54.

For Coppin State, forward Janelle Lane finished with a team-high 23 points (9-of-15), whereas off the bench, Jordan Swails (16) and forward Tanaysa Henderson (11) combined for 27 points (8-of-15), respectively.
