Wildcats finish NCSI with 3-2 record

CLERMONT, Fla.—Runs were tough to come by Sunday morning, as the Bethune-Cookman softball team fell in its final game of the 2016 National Collegiate Softball Invitational hosted by PFX Athletics, dropping a 9-2 decision to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Legends Way Field. Overall for the weekend, Bethune-Cookman garnered a 3-2 record.

For Bethune-Cookman (3-2), pitchers Bailey Conner and Deidra Genera saw time in the circle, with Conner seeing her first action of 2016, getting the nod from head coach Laura Watten.

Conner took the loss in her first decision of the year, tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on a pair of hits and striking out two batters with five walks. Genera finished it off with the final 3 1/3 innings worked, allowing five unearned runs on nine hits and walking two against a single strikeout.

Kailey Palazzolo worked the entire game for the Mocs, earning her first win of the year to improve to 1-0. She allowed just the two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts and three walks.

B-CU was led offensively by Iesha Waters’ 2-for-2 day at the dish, adding a RBI. Annie Bakenhus, Brianna Sanders and Sophia Ortega all tallied a hit apiece, with Bakenhus and Ortega scoring the Maroon and Gold runs.

Bethune-Cookman takes to the field next in Cathedral City, California, as the Wildcats take part in the first of two Mary Nutter Collegiate Classics on the west coast. B-CU opens play Friday, Feb. 19, taking on Pacific and LSU, respectfully.

Savannah State Falls to College of Charleston

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah State University softball team (1-4) fell to College of Charleston (3-1) to end the Inaugural Lady Tiger Classic on Sunday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field. 

Freshman third baseman Cortni Jones led SSU with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs, while sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris and junior right fielder Alexis Singleton each went 2-for-4, while Harris added a run scored and two RBIs and Singleton added a run scored.

Junior pitcher Amanda Hallman started the game and pitched 5.0 innings giving up four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts, while freshman pitcher Faith Dickerson (0-1) picked up the loss, pitching the final two innings giving up two runs on four hits.

Taylor DuPree led the Cougars with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, while Jordin Jones went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Sydney Shipley started the game and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits, while Valerie Cassell (2-0) picked up the win pitching the final 1.2 shutout innings.

The Lady Tigers are back in action this weekend with the USC Spartan Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.

Rattlers Drop Final Two Games At Sand Dollar Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala.—The FAMU Women’s Softball team dropped their final two games in the 2016 Sand Dollar Classic Saturday and Sunday, to finish the season-opening weekend 3-2.

Saturday evening, FAMU dropped a wild 8-6 decision to Jackson State in a game which saw several lead changes.

Against Jackson State, leading FAMU’s nine-hit offensive attack was Toni Anderson, who belted her second homer of the season, finishing with two hits and three RBIs. Alexis Day and Nachelle Watson each had two hits and an RBI, while Kieffi Myrick hit her second homer of the tournament, a solo shot for her one hit, with Amber Fullwood rounding out the hitting with one single.

Fullwood (0-1) took the loss in the pitching circle for FAMU, working into the seventh, allowing seven runs on nine hits in six innings, before being lifted for Veronica Burse, who allowed a run on two hits in closing out the top of the seventh.

Maryland Eastern Shore Wraps Up Weekend with Split

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On another frigid day in Greensboro, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team wrapped up the weekend with another spilt at the Aggie Invitational. The club rallied from behind to take down in-state rival Coppin State, 11-6, but fell to North Carolina A&T State (NCAT), 3-1.

UMES finished the opening weekend with a 2-2 mark.

Similar to Friday, Maryland Eastern Shore was firing on all cylinders as they produced 11 run on 12 hits. Five Hawks had multi-hit performances, led by junior Allison Anderson with three dingers. Senior Vanessa Gomez came up clutch as she tied her career-high with five RBIs in the victory.

On Feb. 27-28, the Lady Hawks head to Baltimore where they will take part in the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational. The two-day tournament features UMES, UMBC and Lafayette.
