North Carolina Central Drops Decision To Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Both North Carolina Central University men’s tennis freshmen won in their singles debut but host Liberty University was able to prevail, 5-2, in the Eagles season-opening dual match Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel Cucalon rolled to his first win in the No. 2 singles position in the lineup with matching 6-3 set wins.

Davide Callegari had to work a little harder in third flight debut before securing his first triumph in three sets by scores of 6-4, 2-6 and 6-2.

Sophomore Kert Kilumets nearly secured a third point for the Eagles but eventually lost in a super-set tiebreaker. Kilumets was playing atop NCCU’s lineup in his 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 loss.

The Flames, who were the benefactors of forfeit wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, coasted to straight set wins in the bottom two singles contests.

Liberty (2-3 Overall) squeaked out a 6-4 win in the top doubles match to earn the first team point.

Cucalon and Callegari were leading their middle doubles match, 5-4, when play was stopped.

NCCU (0-1) next visits Coastal Carolina University on Friday at 2 p.m.
