Daniel Moves Up To Second All Time, but Howard Comes Up Short

BALTIMORE, Md.--James Daniel, III  scored a game-high 28 points to move up to second place all time in scoring school history, but it mattered little as Christian Kessee and Josh Treadwell combined for 53 points to lead Coppin State to a 90-66 win over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at the Physical Education Complex.

​Daniel needed 22 points coming into the game to surpass Gerald Glover who had 1,712 during his career at Howard.

His three-point play at the 7:48 mark of the second half, giving his 23 points.  He now needs 7 points to surpass Aaron Shingler, the all-time leader, who scored 1,724 from 1963-67.

​​The Eagles shot 53-percent from the floor, including 10-of-25 from beyons the arc for 40-percent.

​The Bison shot 28-percent but they were able to maintain their consistency at the free throw line where they were 73-percent (26-of-36).

​Keon Hill finished with 13 points and Marcel Boyd just missed his seventh double double with 9 points and 14 rebounds.

​Kessee tied his career record with 27 points while Treadwell tallied 26 for a career best.  Trevon Seymore and Terry Harris, Jr. had 14 and 12, respectively.

The Bison will try to take advantage of their four-game home streak when they start it off against Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at 7:30 pm.

Seniors Steal the Show as North Carolina Central Defeats Bethune-Cookman

DURHAM, N.C.--Seniors Dante Holmes and Jeremiah Ingram combined for 43 points to help North Carolina Central University cage the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University, 90-66 at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 13.  

Holmes tossed in 14 of his game-high 22 points in the first 20 minutes to push the Eagles to a 38-31 advantage after act one, and NCCU held the lead from that point on.

Kyle Benton turned in a 15 point performance with seven rebounds, and Dajuan Graf chipped in 10 points and four assists.  Patrick Cole and C.J. Wiggins battled for the game-high in assists with six and five, respectively.

The Eagles will host Florida A&M for its second-to-last home game of the 2015-16 season on Monday, Feb. 15.

Strong Second Half Keys Hornets Past Rival Hawks in MEAC Clash

DOVER, Del.—Delaware State outscored UMES 48-35 in the second half en route to a 75-71 victory over the Hawks in a MEAC contest before an enthusiastic sell-out crowd in Memorial Hall today.

DeAndre Haywood scored a season-high 24 points, including 17 in the second half, and Devin Morgan added 16 to lead the Hornets, who trailed 36-27 at the half. Haywood hit eight of his 13 shots, including 2-of-2 on 3-pointers.

DSU’s Kavon Waller came off the bench to tally 15 points on four-of-four shooting from the field, including two 3-pointers. Waller is 9-for-14 from the field, including 6-of-7 on three-point shots, in the last two games.

Dominique Elliott led three UMES players in double-figures with 15 points. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Ryan Andino scored 12 points on four three-point field goals, and Bakari Copeland added 11 for the Hawks.

DSU returns to action on Monday at Coppin State. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.

NSU Ties School Record for Blocks, Gets Balanced Effort in Win over MSU

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State men's basketball team set the school record for blocks in a game and got a balanced scoring effort on Saturday night in a 79-73 victory over Morgan State at Joseph Echols Hall.

Five players scored in double figures for the Spartans, all between 11 and 13 points. Sophomore Jordan Butler finished 7-of-9 from the free throw line and led the team with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks. His seven swats tied a career high and the school's Division I record shared with Kyle O'Quinn.

Junior D'Shon Taylor tallied 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Spartans, while freshman Alex Long also had 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting with five rebounds and a career-high tying four blocks. They helped NSU outscore Morgan State 40-34 in points in the paint on a day when the Spartans hit just 3-of-23 (13-percent) from 3-point range.

Cedic Blossom carried the Bears in the second half with 17 points, part of a 28-point effort in the game on 11-of-17 shooting. He also completed the double-double with 15 rebounds, as MSU held a slight 41-37 edge on the glass, including 17-9 in offensive boards and a 19-11 advantage in second chance points.

Simpson added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Phillip Carr and Andre Horne each tallied 11 points.

NSU will travel to Delaware to face the Hornets of Delaware State next Saturday.
