MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY MEN?S AND WOMEN?S TENNIS HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – Bethune-Cookman's Alvaro Barrera and Savannah State sophomore Elizabeth Geronimo were chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, the conference announced today. Jose Plazas, of Bethune-Cookman, and Rachida Kateb, of Savannah State, were selected as the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Rookies of the Week.

Barrera (Jr., Madrid, Spain) went 2-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action against Embry-Riddle, Florida Gulf Coast, Marquette and College of Charleston. At the No. 6 position, he posted a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, victory over Florida Gulf Coast’s Lucas Vaz.

Geronimo (So., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) went 3-1 during the week and won both singles matches at the No. 2 position. She rallied to defeat Gabriela Lackova, of Alabama State, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0, and paired up with Sandy Lochu for a doubles victory.

Plazas (Fr., Bogota, Colombia) finished 2-1 in singles play against Embry-Riddle, Florida Gulf Coast and College of Charleston. He defeated Arreygue Rodolfo, of Embry-Riddle, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to help lift the Wildcats to the win.

Kateb (Fr., Angers, France) went 1-1 during the week against Alabama A&M and Alabama State. She defeated Alabama A&M’s Orianna Rodriguez, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 position.

Walner Espinoza (FAMU) posted a three-set win, at the No. 4 position, against the College of Charleston.
