DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior outside hitter Kelsey Murphy has been named to the 2016-17 Academic All-District Volleyball Teams, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Murphy is one of eight NCAA Division I honorees for District 3 that were selected out of nearly 60 nominees from all DI programs within the states of North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

“Her commitment on the court and off the court really says a lot about her character, drive and motivation,” said NCCU head coach Jody Brown. “Kelsey’s success as a student-athlete serves as a great role model for all of our other female student-athletes, and is a true testament to her hard work and the great support system around her.”

Murphy boasts a 3.96 grade point average in her senior year at NCCU. She is a business administration major who plans to pursue a career in sales and marketing. Murphy has garnered Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Academic status and has collected the NCCU volleyball Academic Award.

The resident of Rancho Cucamonga, California, has been a stellar four-year letter winner for the Lady Eagles. Murphy is currently averaging 2.37 points and 2.24 digs per set in her final campaign.

For her career, Murphy enters her last three regular season matches has played in 105 total matches with 883 kills, 743 digs, 84 blocks, 65 aces and 40 assists. Her 883 career kills is a NCCU modern era record since 2007 that she is still building upon.

Murphy is a two-time All-MEAC Third Team selection and two-time team MVP that is respected by her teammates as the squads’ reigning Players Choice Award winner. She has been named to three weekend All-Tournament teams and was a past NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month.

The 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-District Volleyball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Murphy will automatically be nominated for 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as a First Team All-District honoree. The NCAA Division I Academic All-America First, Second and Third Teams are slated to be announced by CoSIDA on Thursday, December 8.
