PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Maryland Eastern Shore won their first MEAC Championship match since the 2012 season Friday night, sweeping the North Carolina A&T State Aggies in the quarterfinals finale (25-12, 25-15, 25-17). The Hawks improved to 18-12 and will face Florida A&M in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, while the Aggies conclude their season at 9-15.
The Hawks ended the game with a hitting percentage of .430, their second highest on the season. Sophomore Lucia Babic earned her second double-double of the year with match highs in kills with 12 and digs with 11. Junior Kirstin Fink achieved a season high 10 kills with an impressive .615 hitting percentage.
Senior Mere Serea participated on seven of the team’s eight blocks, including one solo, and freshman Ivana Blazevic averaged over ten assists per set with 33. Blazevic and sophomore Rachel Kayongo split six aces between them, and as a team the Hawks piled up ten aces throughout the match.
North Carolina A&T State was led by Samara Brown with 11 kills. Libero Keniah Rivera led the Aggies with six digs and Kayla Finnerty supplied 12 assists and five digs.
The Aggies rallied from a negative hitting percentage in the first set to hit .231 with 11 kills in the third set. Maryland Eastern Shore hit .583 in the second set with 16 kills against two errors.
