IOWA CITY, Iowa – A pair of runs to end quarters for homestanding Iowa helped the Hawkeyes defeat Hampton 84-51 on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A close first quarter saw Malia Tate-DeFreitas open the game with a 3-pointer and a Georgianna Gilbeaux layup gave Hampton an early 5-0 lead. A 3-pointer from Monnazjea Finney-Smith put Hampton up 10-8 with 4:31 left in the quarter. Tate-DeFreitas closed the quarter with a jumper to bring Hampton to 19-16 after the first quarter.
Tate-DeFreitas scored 22 points to lead everyone in scoring. She is now one point from passing LaShondra Dixon-Gordon for second on the Hampton University all-time scoring list. Tate-DeFreitas has 1,966 career points, while Dixon-Gordon is next with 1,967. Finney-Smith joined her in double figures with 10 points, while Ashley Bates added eight as Hampton fell to 0-2. Ally Disterhoft was the leading scorer for Iowa pacing four in double figures with 16 points.
Virginia 103, Coppin State 40
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Chance Graham led two Eagles scoring in double figures with 13 points in a 103-40 loss to the University of Virginia on Sunday, November 13th in the John Paul Jones Arena.
Coppin State (0-2) struggled from the field shooting 21 percent (12-of-56) and 15 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range in their second game of the season. Virginia (2-0) forced 24 total turnovers and out-rebounded the Eagles 50-35 in a 63 point win. The Eagles converted 14-of-26 (54 percent) free-throws and made a pair of three-pointers, their first of the season.
Freshman Chance Graham finished with a team-high 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and an assist. She made 5-of-8 free-throws and 4-of-11 shots from the field. Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas played the entire game for the fifth time in her career logging 40 minutes against Virginia. She scored ten points, grabbed six rebounds, with three steals and two assists. She was one of two Eagles that made a three-pointer. Senior Keena Samuels scored seven points, had two rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman Oluwadamilola Oloyede had four points, three rebounds and an assist in her Eagle debut.
Savannah State 68, Columbia College 52
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Graduate student guard Lauren “Gaby” Moss led the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (1-1) with 20 points as the Lady Tigers won their home opener with a 68-52 win over Columbia College (1-2) Sunday in Tiger Arena.
Moss shot 7-for-13 from the floor and added six rebounds and two assists, while senior center Tiyonda Davis recorded her second 20-plus rebounding performance of her career with 20 rebounds. Davis also added six blocks, three assists, three points and two steals.
Senior forward Jeremica Edwards added 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting with seven rebounds, while senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added 12 points with three assists, three rebounds and five steals. Senior guard Rhianna Warren added seven points and three rebounds.
The Koalas were led by Amber Sherrill with 19 points and eight rebounds, Briana Johnson with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Drexel 69, Delaware State 44
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- Delaware State was a combined six-for-28 from the field in the second and third quarters en route to a 69-44 women’s basketball loss at Drexel.
The Lady Hornets had just 18 field goals on 57 attempts for the game (31.6 percent), including five three-pointers on 18 tries (27.8 percent).
Sarah Curran led three Drexel players in double-figures with a game-high 18 points. Jessica Pellechio and Bailey Greenberg added 10 points each for the Dragons.
Freshman guard Lanayjha Ashe came off the bench to lead Delaware State with 12 points on five-for -seven shooting from the field, including two-of-three on three-point shots. The 5-7 Ashe also led all players with 10 rebounds.
Delaware State sophomore forward NaJai Pollard was held to five points on two-for-10 shooting from the field. Pollard scored a career-high 29 points in the Lady Hornets’ season opener against Detroit Mercy on Friday evening. The preseason All-MEAC First Team pick did grab six rebounds and had two blocks in the Drexel contest.
