NORFOLK, Va. — Florida A&M freshman Maria Yvette Garcia was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Teammate Elena Dimitrova earned Setter of the Week honors, while Morgan Marlbrough of Howard was selected Defensive Specialist of the Week. Bethune-Cookman’s Alana Handy was named Rookie of the Week.
Garcia (OH, 6-2, Fr., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) averaged a double-double of 15.0 kills and 10.0 digs in wins over North Florida and Bethune-Cookman. She posted a team-high 19 kills in a four-set victory against Bethune-Cookman.
Handy (OH, 5-10, Fr., Burlington, Wash.) averaged 25.0 kills per match and 6.25 kills per set against Florida Gulf Coast and Florida A&M. She recorded her sixth-straight double-double, with 23 kills and 13 digs, in four sets against Florida Gulf Coast.
Dimitrova (S, 6-1, Fr., Sofia, Bulgaria) compiled 77 assists, 11 digs, four kills, one block and one service ace in wins over North Florida and Bethune-Cookman. She recorded a match-high 28 assists in a three-set victory over North Florida.
Marlbrough (LB, 5-4, Sr., Mandeville, La.) averaged 10.0 digs per match and 3.33 digs per set in wins over Norfolk State and Hampton. She notched a match-high 12 digs to help Howard hold Hampton to a .163 hitting percentage.
