DURHAM, N.C. – Three Lady Eagles were honored before Sunday’s Senior Day match and then several underclassmen helped the North Carolina Central University women’s volleyball team secure postseason play for the hosts with a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division win over Savannah State University. The Lady Eagles hit a season-high .333 in defeating the Lady Tigers by a final score of 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20. NCCU (5-13 Overall, 4-3 MEAC) moved over .500 in the league and will return to the MEAC Tournament with the triumph after missing the tourney last season. Savannah State (1-25, 1-8) was eliminated from postseason consideration.
Several Lady Eagles had personal best performances during the season’s final game inside McDougald-McLendon Arena. Sophomore middle blocker Whitney White led all players with a career-high 20 kills while hitting a staggering .500. Junior setter Paige Phillips tallied career-best marks of 44 assists and six kills. Freshman outside hitter Kennedy White launched four aces and made 10 digs, which were also new best figures. Freshman Dominique Ingram led the Lady Tigers with 14 kills. Senior Justice Dilworth just missed a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs. Junior setter Alee Quint finished with 31 assists and senior Caitlynn Masoe logged six kills, 12 assists and nine digs.
Howard 3, Hampton 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-14, 25-20) over Hampton on Senior Day, the Howard volleyball team clinched the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division championship for the third straight season.
The Bison were able to do right by seniors Janaya Hampton, Dominique Cleggett, Whitney Fields, Katherine Broussard, Briana Jackson and Morgan Marlbrough as they remain perfect in conference play (10-0) and improve to 21-5 overall.
Junior Jessica Young hit .615 after connecting on nine of 13 swings to pace the team. Fields and junior Khaila Donaldson had seven and six kills, respectively, along with two blocks apiece.
Hampton and sophomore Courtney Dalton each had five kills. Jackson handed out 10 assists and sophomore Tamia Dockery tallied a match-high 21 helpers. Marlbrough added 12 digs and Cleggett notched five kills and three blocks.
Micah Leavell led the way for Hampton (5-16, 4-6 MEAC) with 14 kills, five digs and two blocks, while Brianna Lilly posted 25 assists.
Morgan State 3, Delaware State 0
BALTIMORE, Md. --- Delaware State came up short in its bid for a two-match win streak, falling to Morgan State 3-0 in a MEAC contest.
The score were 25-20, 25-18 and 25-12.
Morgan State’s Haley McClure led all players with 16 digs and teammate Keana Browne notched 14. Roi Wallace had a match-high 35 assists, while Natasha Barker tallied 20 digs for the Bears.
Sabina Szmajduch had eight kills and Kalena Wiggins four to lead the Hornets. Aaliyah McBean recorded a team-high 14 digs and Gabriella Enriquez was tops for DSU with 14 assists.
North Carolina A&T State 3, South Carolina State 1
GREENSBORO, N.C.– Junior Samara Brown has played a versatile role for the North Carolina A&T State volleyball teams since she arrived. In addition to her ability passing, set and defend at the net, Brown is quickly adding offensive weapon to her capabilities. Brown had her fourth straight match with her kill totals in the teens or higher to lead the Aggies to a four-set win (25-18, 25-13, 21-25, 25-12) over South Carolina State Sunday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.
Brown finished with 17 kills, seven digs and had a .375 hitting percentage, and she had plenty of help offensively as the Aggies posted a season-high .415 hitting percentage in the win. Fifth-year middle hitter Te’Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth returned to her usual form, getting a season-high 12 kills with a .588 hitting percentage. Freshman Christa Wilson had a few season highs herself. Her 14 kills and .440 hitting percentage were season bests and she added eight digs to her totals.
Juniors Jasmine Lindor and Alyssa Pitt were on the brink of double-figure kills. Lindor had nine kills, a .500 hitting percentage and continued to be one of the best defenders in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with three block assists. Pitt had eight kills and a .312 hitting percentage.
Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Coppin State 1
BALTIMORE, Md. — Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball rallied from a first set defeat, winning the next three in a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19) over the Coppin State Eagles Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. With the win the Hawks improve to 15-12 (8-2 MEAC) and secured at least a tie for second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division.
Sophomores Lucia Babic and Zuzana Ondruskova led the attack, tying for a match high 11 kills. Ondruskova also delivered her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. Junior Kirstin Fink and sophomore Marta Klafuric impressed on the block with six participations each. Klafuric delivered three solo blocks, while Fink delivered two. As a team the Hawks totaled a season high 14 blocks, compared to four by Coppin State.
Other top performers for the Hawks include 37 assists from freshman Ivana Blazevic and nine digs from sophomore Koya Sowells.
Coppin State received 10 kills from Jasmine Lougheed and 14 digs from libero Glorines Rosado. The Eagles fell to 2-23 (2-9 MEAC).
