DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State bowling team took home first place honors at Kutztown University’s Bud Whitman Memorial Tournament this past weekend. The Hornets won nine of their 10 matches, posting a 5-0 record in regular team games and 4-1 mark on Baker competition, finishing tops among all teams in each category.
DSU wrapped up the tourney with regular team wins over St. Francis Brooklyn (1013-913), Long Island (1101-934), Virginia State (984-785), Kutztown (1030-908) and Chestnut Hill (1002-872) on Sunday.
The Hornets had four of the top eight individual performers in the tournament.
Amber McLeod, Chelsey Merklinger and Alexis Neuer earned All-Tournament honors for their performances on Sunday.
McLeod was second among the more than 120 competitors with a total pinfall of 1069 in five games, for an average of 213.8. She topped the 200-mark in four of the five games, with a high of 244.
Merklinger was third in the individual standings with a 1066 total pinfall (213.2 avg.), highlighted by scores of 243, 240 and 220 in her first three games.
Neuer was sixth overall with a total of 1047 (209.4 avg.), including three 200-plus scores.
Elizabeth Burkholder finished eighth with a total pinfall of 1014 (202.8 avg.), with a top score of 238.
In Saturday’s Baker competition, the Hornets exceeded 1000 total pins in victories over Youngstown State and Duquesne.
Amber McLeod, Burkholder and Bri McLeod were named to the All-Tournament Team for their Baker performances.
