NORFOLK, Va. — Florida A&M freshman Maria Yvette Garcia was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Teammate Valeria Lopez earned Setter of the Week honors, while Koya Sowells, of Maryland Eastern Shore, was selected Defensive Specialist of the Week. Florida A&M’s Nicole Abreu was named Rookie of the Week.
Garcia (OH, 6-1, Fr., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) totaled 24 kills, three assists and six digs in wins over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. She notched a match-high 14 kills in three sets against North Carolina A&T State.
Abreu (OH, 6-0, Fr., Lima Peru) averaged 12.0 digs per match and 7.5 kills per set against North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. She posted a double-double of 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs in a 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T State.
Lopez (S, 5-9, Jr., Medellin, Colombia) complied 65 assists, eight digs, four kills and one service ace against North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. She led the team with 35 assists in a victory over North Carolina A&T State.
Sowells (L, 5-4, So., Missouri City, Texas) averaged 3.83 digs per set and 11.5 digs per match in wins over Morgan State and Coppin State. She also helped Maryland Eastern Shore hold Morgan State to a .061 hitting percentage in a three-set win.

Ivana Blazevic (MDES) posted a career-high five service aces in a victory over Coppin State.
Samara Brown (NCAT) totaled 38 kills, 15 digs, three service aces, two blocks and one assist against Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.
Keana Browne (MSU) finished with 26 kills, four blocks, including two solo, two service aces and one dig against Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State.
Courtney Dalton (HOW) hit a career-high .692, with nine kills, in a win over Hampton.
Tamia Dockery (HOW) led the team with 26 assists in a three-set win over Hampton.
Guro Froberg (CSU) posted a career-high .409 hitting percentage, with a season-best 12 kills, in the victory over Delaware State.
Jasmine Lindor (NCAT) complied 11 blocks, including two solo, against Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.
Dominique Madarang (CSU) tallied a double-double of 14 assists and 15 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Morgan Marlbrough (HOW) recorded six digs, three assists and two service aces against Hampton.
Iva Vujosevic (MDES) hit .520, with 14 kills, in a win over Coppin State.
Roi Wallace (MSU) registered a double-double of 19 assists and 10 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.
