HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team closed out September with their first home match of the 2016 season Friday night and defeated Delaware State 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 at Holland Hall.
Reeana Richardson and Micah Leavell topped Hampton with nine kills each, while Summer Humes had a pair of aces and 11 digs.  Brianna Lilly finished with 30 assists as Hampton won its first match of the year that didn’t go five sets.  Lena Washington and Ravyn Richardson added six kills each, while Kyndall Nicholas had five.

 

 

Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Norfolk State 1
NORFOLK, Va. — Maryland Eastern Shore rebounded from an opening set loss to earn a 3-1 match victory (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18) over the Norfolk State Spartans at Gill Gymnasium Friday evening. The win snaps an eight game losing streak and improves their record to 8-10 (1-1 MEAC).
Senior Mere Serea was a major factor for the Hawks, finishing with 11 kills and an impressive .381 kill percentage. The middle blocker was also superb on defense with 10 block participations, four of them solo, for her first double-double as a Hawk. Sophomore Lucia Babic led in kills with 12 and freshman Ivana Blazevic recorded her second straight double-double with 36 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore libero Koya Sowells tallied 15 digs in the win.
Norfolk State was led by a match-high 20 kills from Jessica Johnson and a double-double of 41 assists and 18 digs from Jill Aquino. The Spartans fell to 2-12 (1-2 MEAC) this season.

 

 

North Carolina A&T State 3, Savannah State 0
SAVANNAH, Ga.  – Senior setter Caitlynn Masoe recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs as the Savannah State University volleyball team (0-19, 0-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina A&T State University (3-9, 1-0 MEAC) 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 25-27) in the Lady Tigers MEAC home opener Friday night in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium to begin SSU’s six-game homestand.
The Long Beach, Calif., native also added six assists, two service aces, a block and recorded a .333 hitting percentage, while junior setter Alee Quint led the team with 20 assists and senior libero Alexis Washington added 12 digs. 
Freshman middle blocker Dominique Ingram added eight kills and three blocks, while senior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel recorded four kills.
The Aggies were led by Samara Brown with 11 kills, Liz Martino with 31 assists and Keniah Rivera with 12 digs.

 

 

 

North Carolina Central 3, South Carolina State 1
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior Casey Curran and sophomore Whitney White both ripped double-digit kills for visiting North Carolina Central University as the Lady Eagles opened up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with a 3-1 win at South Carolina State University on Friday evening.
NCCU (2-8 Overall, 1-0 MEAC) also received nine kills from sophomore Jazmine Daye in posting the 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25 win. The SCSU Lady Bulldogs (0-17, 0-3) remained winless on the season.
Curran posted a career-high 14 kills to pace the Lady Eagles attack. The Garden City, Kansas, product served up three of NCCU’s season-high seven aces.
Junior Tyler Ockleberry played in her first match of the season and was noteworthy with six kills and a team-high 11 digs.
