Gabriel Earns NCCU’s Lone Point in Loss to Catamounts

DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Jasmine Gabriel earned her first collegiate dual match victory for host North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 non-conference loss to Western Carolina University Saturday afternoon.

The Catamounts picked up a second straight win to move over .500 on the early season at 2-1. The Lady Eagles slip to 0-2.

Gabriel notched her straight-set win at No. 2 singles. The Charlotte, North Carolina, product squeaked out the first set 7-5 before completing the victory with a dominating 6-1 second set over WCU senior Megan McLinden.

NCCU senior Aissa Muamba nearly completed a comeback win in the top draw but eventually lost to senior Stacia Kissell in three sets. Kissell – A First Team All-Southern Conference selection in 2014 – held on to win 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Muamba trailed for most of the middle set before rallying for force a tiebreaker that she won 7-1.

Western Carolina won the bottom four singles matches in straight sets.

The Catamounts won all three doubles matches. WCU sealed the first team point with wins at second and third doubles. The top doubles draw went to a tiebreaker at 5-5 after the team point was clinched and Kissell and senior Shannon Bettiol was able to squeak out the 6-5 win over Muamba and sophomore Jamie Rogers by winning the tiebreaker 7-5.

B-CU Falls To Florida Gulf Coast

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Matea Roki and Mina Matsuba registered victories in Bethune-Cookman’s 5-2 loss to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday.

Roki’s win at No. 2 singles brought the Lady Wildcats (0-2) within a team point before FGCU (1-2) reeled off three consecutive wins to seal the match. Matsuba closed the day with a three-set victory over Braena Stampfli at No. 1 singles.

Savannah State Drops Road Match to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The Savannah State University women’s tennis (0-3) fell to Coastal Carolina University (2-1) 6-1 Saturday at Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.

Coastal Carolina went 1-0 after winning the doubles point.  SSU’s doubles team of Junior Sandy Lochu and sophomore Elizabeth Geronimo fell to Coastal Carolina’s doubles team of Libby Scott and Laura Mary 6-1 at the No. 1 doubles position, while freshman Rachida Kateb and junior Jennyfer Vivas fell to Natalie Wall and Cari Berry of Coastal Carolina 6-0 at the No. 2 doubles position and junior Bria Burrows and senior Tiffany Williams fell to CCU’s doubles team of Romane Delay and Marie Babayan 6-0 at the No. 3 doubles position.

Geronimo was the only Lady Tiger to record a victory in the singles as she defeated Wall 3-2, retired at the No. 2 singles position.  Lochu fell to Scott at the No. 1 singles position 6-2, 6-1, while Kateb fell to Delay 1-0, retired at the No. 3 singles position.

Burrows fell to Berry 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position and Williams fell to Brooke Campbell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles position.
