Lady Pirates Defeat Norfolk State For Fifth Straight Win
HAMPTON, Va. – Three players in double figures – including a career night from sophomore forward Mikayla Sayle – helped the Hampton University women’s basketball team defeat rival Norfolk State 73-62 at the HU Convocation Center on Saturday.
The Lady Pirates (9-12, 7-1 MEAC) won their fifth straight game.
Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the way with 24 points on 8-for-17 shooting, while Sayle set new career highs in both points (15) and rebounds (a team-high nine). Freshman guard K’lynn Willis added 14 points, going into double figures for the fifth time in the last six games and a team-high four steals.
The Lady Pirates shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the floor to overcome 19 turnovers. They hit four of their 15 3-pointers (26.7 percent) and went 15-for-25 (60.0 percent) from the free throw line.
Both teams had 36 rebounds.
The Spartans (0-19, 0-9 MEAC) shot 37.5 percent (21-for-56) from the floor and made just three of their 11 3-pointers (27.3 percent). Norfolk State also committed 23 turnovers. Dominique Harper led the Spartans with 17 points.

Balanced Attack Leads DSU Past SCSU for Second Consecutive Win
DOVER, Del. – The Delaware State women’s basketball team (7-13, 4-3 MEAC) wrapped up its season-long three-game homestand on Saturday with a convincing 79-61 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs (8-11, REC MEAC), thanks to five players scoring in double figures and forward Nikkei Blackburn coming off the bench to register a double-double of 11 points (5-of-9) and a game-high 11 boards.
With this win, DSU not only avenged its 61-48 loss at SCSU earlier this season, but Saturday’s victory snapped a six-game slide against the Bulldogs. For South Carolina State, it dropped its second contest in a row to conclude a three-game road trip.
N’Kayah Kersey also poured in 14 points (4-of-7), which included hitting all of her field goals from 3-point range for DSU.
In the assist department, Kersey, along with guards Bri Justice and Aaliyah Davis dropped four dimes, while Aaliyah Davis chipped in with 10 points (4-of-11) and pulled down eight boards. Rounding DSU’s all-around offensive performance was Mikah Aldridge tallying 12 points (3-of-7) off the bench, whereas as a team, the Hornets shot 50 percent (9-of-18) from long distance.

Lady Hawks’ Comeback Falls Short To Coppin State
BALTIMORE, Md. – Trailing as much as 15 points, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team rallied and cut the deficit to a single-possession late into the fourth, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to in-state rival Coppin State, 61-54, inside the Physical Education Complex (PEC) Arena.
Freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) spearhead the Hawk attack in the final period, scoring nine of her 14 points in the fourth.
Despite only shooting 31-percent (17-of-54) from the floor, the Lady Hawks were scorching from behind the arc. Collectively, the club went 7-of-13 from downtown with Moengaroa Subritzky and Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) leading the charge.
Subritzky finished with a team-high 17 points on 60-percent (6-of-10) from the field, including four trey balls while Eaton added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) matched a season-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
Furthermore, forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) reached another milestone as she became the 23rd player in the program’s NCAA Division I history to play in at least 100 games. Udoji finished her afternoon with four boards and three rejections.
For the Eagles (7-11, 4-2 MEAC), Omaah Tayong led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. Janelle Lane and Keena Samuels each chipped in 10 points for Coppin State’s victory.
