UMES pulls out double-OT win over Bethune-Cookman

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In a contest that witnessed 12 ties, 10 lead changes, and two overtimes, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball team survived and knocked off previously first-place Bethune-Cookman (BCU), 76-71, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Despite only shooting 36-percent (21-of-58) after regulation, the Lady Hawks caught fire in extra periods. Overall, the squad tallied 23 points on 58-percent (7-of-12) shooting from the floor and 88-percent (7-of-8) from the foul line.

Senior center Taryana Kelly had a career night, registering her fourth career double-double. The New Jersey native recorded a career-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and snagged 14 boards in 41 minutes of action, also a new career-high. Moengaroa Subritzky matched Kelly’s playing time and chipped in a team-high 19 points, seven rebounds, and a career-high three steals in the win.

For the Wildcats (10-9, 4-2 MEAC), Houston led the way with a game-high 23 points on 50-percent shooting (7-of-14) from the field. Knowles had an outstanding game before fouling out with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in the loss.

Bethune-Cookman’s dynamic duo of Kendra Cooper and Kailyn Williams could not get into a rhythm as both ladies finished with 12 points combined on 4-of-15 shooting from the floor.

Hampton Puts Away Savannah State

HAMPTON, Va. – With a 65-53 win over Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center, the Hampton University women’s basketball team picked up its third straight win.

The Lady Pirates (7-12) improved to 5-1 in MEAC play, while Savannah State dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC.

Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 16 points, while also grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Tate-DeFreitas went 6-for-11 from the floor and dished out seven assists.  Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe added 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard K’lynn Willis chipped in 12 points to score in double figures for the fourth straight game.

The Lady Pirates shot 41.5 percent (27-for-65) from the floor – including a 47.1 percent clip (16-for-34) in the second half. Hampton hit four of its 18 3-pointers (22.2 percent) and seven of 13 free throws (53.8 percent).

Savannah State shot 38.5 percent (20-for-52) from the floor and made just one of nine 3-pointers. The Tigers only made 48.0 percent (12-for-25) of their free throws.   Kenyata Hendrix and Tiyonda Davis each had 12 points for Savannah State.

South Carolina State holds off Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Amber Howard had a team-high 14 points, while teammate Toni Grier finished with 13 points and six rebounds to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 60-52 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Joe Echols Hall.
 
SC State (8-9, 4-3 MEAC) was down 15-12 after the first quarter, but outscored NSU (0-17, 0-7 MEAC) 27-7 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 39-22 advantage.

The Spartans slowly chipped away at the lead and pulled within two, 45-43, with 6:21 left in the game after a pair of free throws by Siobhan Beslow. Kayla Roberts scored eight straight points for NSU to bring the score to 54-51, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to win the game.
 
Kayla Roberts scored a game-high 16 points for NSU, while Siobhan Beslow finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards. Dominique Harper also scored in double digits with 10 points.
