Florida A&M wins third straight, defeats Savannah State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FAMU Women’s Basketball team won their third straight game on New Year’s Day, riding a strong second half surge past the Savannah State Tigers, 59-38 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at The Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (7-7, 1-1 in MEAC) caught fire from the floor in the second half, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (14 of 27) to pull away from the visitors, which trailed 26-18 at the half.

The Rattlers outpaced the Tigers (2-8, 0-1 in MEAC) on the scoreboard over the last two quarters by a 33-20 margin.

Alicia McCray’s layup with 9:16 left in the third put FAMU ahead by 10 points, 28-18 and the Tigers never got closer the rest of the way, as the Rattlers held a 15-point edge, 42-27 after three periods.

Dawn King’s three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the game staked FAMU to its’ largest and final margin at 59-38.

Alicia McCray led FAMU with 15 points, followed by Olivia Antilla with 11 points.

FAMU hosts Mercer University in their next game on Monday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in The Al Lawson Center.

Lady Pirates open New Year with loss to Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team fell 68-59 to Stetson on Friday at the Edmunds Center in their first game of the 2016 calendar year.

The Lady Pirates fell to 3-10 on the season.

Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 27 points on 8-for-27 shooting, hitting four 3-pointers. She moved into fourth on the program’s all-time scoring list, surpassing Rachel Butler (2004-08). She has 1,543 career points.

Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe added 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Ryan Jordan grabbed a team-high 10 boards.

Freshman guard K’lynn Willis added a season-high nine points off the bench.

The Lady Pirates shot 29.0 percent (20-for-69) from the floor and made six of their 17 3-pointers (35.3 percent). Hampton also went 13-for-17 (76.5-percent) from the free-throw line.

Stetson (9-5) shot 36.4 percent (16-for-44) from the floor and made six of 18 3-pointers. The Hatters, who held a 41-40 rebounding edge, also went 30-for-39 (76.9-percent) from the free throw line.

Brianti Saunders led Stetson with 26 points.

The Lady Pirates will be in Princeton, N.J. on Sunday to take on Princeton at 2 p.m.
